RANDALLSTOWN -- If Troy Smith is angry, disappointed or frustrated about the loss of his backup job with the signing of former Pro Bowl selection Marc Bulger, the Baltimore Ravens' reserve quarterback isn't wearing those emotions on his sleeve.
And the former Heisman Trophy winner isn't inclined to display anything other than a positive attitude outwardly about the situation even though he's been demoted on the depth chart and his job security as far as a roster spot has taken a hit.
"I'm proud to have another teammate," Smith said Wednesday morning during Ravens safety Ed Reed's youth football camp. "He's definitely a good guy. I've been a fan of his for a while. That side of what's going on, I can't control. I've said this time and time again: It's definitely about me being back here. This is where I've been for a while getting better and working in our offense."
Bulger is a two-time Pro Bowl pick with the St. Louis Rams who was signed to a one-year, $3.8 million contract that can be boosted to as much as $5.3 million should he need to step in for starter Joe Flacco.
Smith is a mobile, charismatic, undersized former Ohio State star who has done well in the Wildcat offense and as a substitute over the years. The fifth-round draft pick isn't nearly as accurate or productive, though, as Bulger.
Smith was asked if he was disappointed about Bulger's addition and what it could mean to his status.
There's a possibility the Ravens could go with just two quarterbacks on the roster, or they could pick one quarterback as the third guy between Smith and John Beck.
"Everybody gets a chance to compete, though," Smith said. "That's the way the game is. Even Joe is in competition. We all get a chance to bond together and become a great quarterback group."
Smith didn't have much to say about recent rumors that the Philadelphia Eagles are interested in him.
The Eagles have discussed Smith and Beck with Ravens coach John Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.
Although Eagles coach Andy Reid expressed some interest in Smith, nothing concrete materialized as the interest in him wasn't strong throughout the organization.
"I can't control things like that," Smith said. "It's just about getting better as a player and as a quarterback."
In a radio interview Tuesday, Reed said that Smith was more than capable of leading the Ravens to a Super Bowl title.
"I honestly think at the quarterback position Troy was the guy and is the guy, and he's more than qualified to lead the team to a championship," Reed said. "And I think that Marc Bulger is just another guy. He's just another guy that has been in the league and been around."
Smith was flattered to receive an endorsement from Reed.
"I definitely appreciate it," Smith said. "Especially coming from a guy like Ed Reed."

A classy way for Troy Smith to handle the situation not like Flacco and Reed. It is highly unlikely Troy will be on this team this year unless some team wants to pick up Beck more. If Ravens keep three QBS Beck is a better choicve since Smith is unlikely to be here next year. Ravens are very likely to only carry two this year with so much depth at the receiver position including tight end. But Smith by saying the right thing will impress more GMS and Coaches than having an out spoken negative approach to his situation. Philly,Buffalo may be best landing spot. Look for Eagles to make an offer for Gaither before camp breaks. Steelers need him more but I doubt Ozzie will trade him inside the division. Chargers is another landing spot for Gaither too. Both players are keeping quiet and if deal is right in Ozzie's mind it may get done before game one.
