Suggs doesn't attend team meeting as veterans report
WESTMINSTER -- Outside linebacker Terrell Suggs was a no-show at the Baltimore Ravens' first full-team meeting Wednesday night as veterans reported, and he's contemplating skipping the entire training camp.

Team spokesman Kevin Byrne confirmed that Suggs wasn't present at the meeting, which was held at the team hotel.

As an unsigned franchise player, Suggs isn't technically a holdout. Under the NFL collective bargaining agreement, he's allowed to skip camp without financial penalties.

Suggs hasn't signed his $8.472 million tender, a new hybrid defensive end-linebacker designation in a compromise created after he filed a grievance against the Ravens over what position he should be classified at.

General manager Ozzie Newsome declined to comment on Suggs. Suggs' agent, Gary Wichard, hasn't returned telephone calls.

When cornerback Chris McAlister was the Ravens' franchise player a few years ago, he sat out the whole camp.

The Ravens have seemed prepared for this possibility ever since they were unable to negotiate a contract extension prior to a league deadline last week. It's believed that the team made an extremely lucrative offer, but Suggs rejected it.

"We're going to find out," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Monday when asked whether he expected Suggs to report. "His situation is a little bit unique, and he's got to do what's best for him going forward right now."

With Suggs working out on his own with a personal trainer, second-year linebacker Antwan Barnes is expected to take his place with the first-string defense.

Cornerback Samari Rolle was the only other player who didn't attend the meeting. Rolle was excused from the first few days of camp after his father died of a heart attack.

Harry Rolle's funeral service will be held Saturday.

  • 5/24/12: For now, the Ravens are primarily having Paul Kruger lined up at Suggs' rush outside linebacker spot.
  • 5/24/12: Rookie 2nd round pick Kelechi Osemele took the majority of the first-string repetitions at left guard with Jah Reid rotating in at tackle.
