OWINGS MILLS -- The second-degree assault charges that Baltimore Ravens safety Gerome Sapp and former Ravens long snapper Joe Maese filed against each other were dismissed by a Baltimore district judge after the two former teammates declined to testify against each other, according to court records.
Both men invoked their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, prompting the judge to issue a not guilty verdict.
Maese's attorney said that the two professional athletes resolved the matter prior to going to court.
After Maese, 29, filed a formal complaint against Sapp, 27, following an altercation at an Inner Harbor bar in December, Sapp filed countercharges against Maese.
Ultimately, though, the judge decided to throw out the case.
When Maese initially filed charges, he alleged that Sapp attacked him in the stairwell of Angels Rock Bar at Power Plant Live.
“I was walking down the stairwell when Gerome Sapp ran after me and punched me,” Maese wrote in a court document. “He swung a second time and missed as we went to the ground. A bartender, Trent O’Connor, grabbed Gerome and pulled him off of me. Gerome ran back up the stairs laughing.”
Drafted by Baltimore in the sixth round out of Notre Dame in 2003, Sapp is an unrestricted free agent was reacquired in a trade from the Indianapolis Colts in 2006.
Drafted in the sixth round in 2001 out of New Mexico, Maese was cut by the Ravens prior to the 2005 season and replaced by Matt Katula.
