The Beat with Aaron Wilson - Ravens taking close look at draft eligible talent

Written By:
OWINGS MILLS -- As the Baltimore Ravens scour the nation to evaluate NFL draft prospects, their scouts and coaching staff have been racking up frequent-flier miles.

The Ravens attended the University of Texas workout, which was headlined by wide receiver Limas Sweed, offensive tackle Tony Hills and running back Jamaal Charles.

Earlier this week, Ravens director of college scouting Eric DeCosta, director of pro personnel George Kokinis and assistant offensive line coach Andy Moeller attended Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan's high-profile Pro Day. They were also in Chestnut Hill, Mass., to scout offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus.

At 6-foot-8, 317 pounds, Cherilus flashed outstanding speed with a 5.0 clocking in the 40-yard dash and excelled during position drills.

The Ravens attended a University of Michigan workout where quarterback Chad Henne, a potential second-round target, was of particular interest. The Ravens are expected to have him in for a private workout or visit next month.

The Ravens were on hand to watch Georgia Tech linebacker Philip Wheeler, a 6-2, 240-pound senior who ran a 4.73 and turned in a 36 1/2 vertical leap.

New secondary coach Chuck Pagano was at Kansas' workout to observe ball-hawking cornerback Aqib Talib. Talib shaved a few tenths of a second off his 40-yard dash time from the scouting combine, running a 4.42 and a 4.44 this month.

Defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, a former Oklahoma defensive coordinator, attended the Sooners' Pro Day. However, defensive back Reggie Smith and wide receiver Malcolm Kelly opted to skip the session and will hold a separate workout on April 9.

The Ravens have also been scouting cornerbacks Antoine Cason (Arizona) and Mike Jenkins (South Florida) and strong safety Josh Barrett (Arizona State). The Ravens also met with Barrett at the scouting combine.

A delegation of Ravens personnel will be on hand at the Louisville campus Monday to watch quarterback Brian Brohm, who will also meet with team officials next month at their training complex.

Aaron Wilson covers the Baltimore Ravens for the Carroll County Times and the Annapolis Capital.
