Ravens sign Kelley Washington
OWINGS MILLS -- In a move intended to add size and depth to the wide receiver position, the Baltimore Ravens officially signed veteran free agent Kelley Washington to a one-year contract.

Washington passed his physical and signed his contract prior to practicing with the Ravens on Monday as they opened a four-day passing camp.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound former University of Tennessee standout verbally agreed to terms last week following a strong tryout at a recent full-team minicamp where the team also auditioned Jerry Porter and Tab Perry.

A former third-round draft pick, Washington played for Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson when he was coaching the Cincinnati Bengals’ receivers.

“Kelley is a professional who’s been in this system and has had hard coaching,” Jackson said in a statement. “I know [wide receivers] coach [Jim] Hostler will take him to a whole different level. I also think Kelley is good for our guys in that he knows what to expect, and he’s willing to do everything it takes for our team to succeed.”

Washington caught just one pass last season for the New England Patriots, blocking one punt. In six NFL seasons, Washington has registered 73 career receptions for 896 yards and nine touchdowns.

Washington, 29, was cut by the Patriots in February two years after signing a five-year contract with a maximum value of $22 million.

Most of his production lately has been on special teams.

Meanwhile, the Ravens cut wide receiver Marcus Maxwell on Monday. Maxwell ended last season on injured reserve with a hip injury after being deactivated for six games last year.

Aaron Wilson covers the Baltimore Ravens for the Carroll County Times and the Annapolis Capital.
