Former Dolphins second-round pick to compete for backup job

OWINGS MILLS -- In a transaction that creates competition for the backup quarterback job, the Baltimore Ravens officially signed former second-round quarterback John Beck to a one-year contract Monday and cut veteran quarterback Todd Bouman.

Beck will compete with former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith for the primary backup job behind starter Joe Flacco. Beck visited the Ravens prior to the 2007 NFL draft after a prolific career at BYU. 

Beck, 27, flew into Baltimore on Sunday to take a physical and finalize his contract.

The former BYU star played for Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron with the Miami Dolphins during a 1-15 season two years ago, but was cut last week after the Dolphins drafted West Virginia quarterback Pat White. Beck drew interest from six teams and chose Baltimore over the Jacksonville Jaguars.


“John is a player we evaluated thoroughly in preparing for the 2007 draft,” Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said in a statement. “He was a very productive college player, but what also impressed our scouts was how competitive he is. We like to bring in good athletes who love to compete and he fits that.”


Beck went 0-4 as a starter as a rookie, passing for one touchdown and three interceptions with seven fumbles, losing five, and was sacked 10 times. He completed 60 of 107 passes for 559 yards, rushing for one touchdown, and registered a 62.0 quarterback rating.

Drafted with the 40th overall pick as the fourth quarterback taken two years ago, the 6-foot-2, 216-pounder was signed to a four-year contract that included $3.25 million in guaranteed money.

At BYU, Beck was a two-time All-Mountain West Conference selection and is the school's second all-time leading passer with 11,021 career yards and ranks third in touchdown passes with 79 behind Ty Detmer and Jim McMahon. During his senior year, Beck passed for 3,885 yards and 32 touchd owns.
 
Last season, Beck didn't play in any games for Miami under a new regime of Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano.

Beck played high school football in Mesa, Ariz., with Ravens tight end Todd Heap.

Bouman didn't play in any games last season for Baltimore. He was re-signed to a veteran minimum contract April 6 prior to being cut Monday.

Now, the Ravens have Flacco, Smith, Beck and undrafted University of Buffalo rookie Drew Willy on the roster.
