OWINGS MILLS -- The Baltimore Ravens intend to retain defensive coordinator Rex Ryan on new coach John Harbaugh's staff and are in the process of working out the details, according to general manager Ozzie Newsome.
No formal resolution was reached Friday, but Newsome expressed confidence that something will ultimately be finalized.
"Yes, we would like Rex to remain our defensive coordinator," Newsome said. "He told me that was what he wanted to do: to stay here. We're working toward making that happen."
Ryan was fired along with the entire staff when coach Brian Billick was dismissed by team owner Steve Bisciotti on Dec. 31, but remains under contract for next season with a salary between $1 million and $1.2 million.
Ryan is seeking a significant raise, and team officials appear willing to modify his contract with a bump in pay and a contract extension.
After returning from the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., on Thursday, Ryan worked for most of the day Friday at the Ravens' headquarters.
Ryan didn't return a telephone call seeking comment.
Ryan and Harbaugh, who worked together at the University of Cincinnati in 1996, have been talking every day since Harbaugh was hired a week ago.
"They have a previous relationship, no doubt, having worked together," Newsome said. "So, that's a good thing."
Although Ryan has drawn interest from other teams, including the Washington Redskins and New York Jets, the Ravens have the ability to block any lateral move. Ryan, who interviewed for the Ravens' head coaching job along with the Atlanta Falcons and the Miami Dolphins, has said he doesn't want to be a defensive coordinator anywhere except for Baltimore.
Ryan was a finalist last year for the San Diego Chargers, who went with Norv Turner.
Although Harbaugh has several positions to fill, the Ravens don't appear to be in a major rush.
If Ryan remains in Baltimore, Mike Pettine is expected to remain with the Ravens as a linebackers coach.
"John is progressing with getting a staff together," Newsome said. "We just want to get it done the right way."
The Ravens made their first hire earlier this week when they named former Miami Dolphins head coach Cam Cameron as their offensive coordinator.
"I have a lot of respect for Cam, I have a lot of respect for what he did at San Diego," Newsome said. "He's been a head coach and he could be a buffer for John in that role."
