Ravens expected to hire Jim Caldwell as quarterbacks coach
OWINGS MILLS -- The Baltimore Ravens might have already earned their first victory of the season over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

They are expected to hire former Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell as their new quarterbacks coach days after Caldwell was interviewed by Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.

When the Ravens retained offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, coach John Harbaugh said that hiring a quarterbacks coach was a possibility. And now it's expected to become a reality once Caldwell finalizes a contract with the AFC North champions.

Caldwell has a long history of working with injured Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, but was fired following a 2-14 season where Manning didn't play at all following neck surgery.

Caldwell has been a quarterbacks coach at Penn State, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and with the Colts.

Caldwell was replaced by Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano.

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco passed for 3,610 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, outplaying New England Patriots quarrterback in an AFC championship game loss. Flacco passed for two touchdowns and one interception during a 23-20 loss.

Caldwell was the head coach with the Colts for three seasons, succeeding Tony Dungy.

He was previously a head coach at Wake Forest.

The Colts made it to the Super Bowl in Caldwell's first season as head coach, but lost to the New Orleans Saints.

The Colts lost to the New York Jets in the playoffs the following year.

Sure, Caldwell interviewed in Pittsburgh; HOWEVER, I'd say he was not offered the job...would you rather be an OC or a QB coach? Duh!!!
The real question is: how much credit does he deserve for Peyton becoming Peyton?!? Great coaches are made by...great players!

last year it was "let's see how cam does when he doesn't have the added pressure of all of those (GOOD) minds around him" this year, after we see what he can do, it's "he can come back as long as he hires a QB coach for joe". any pattern here? cam will just bury caldwell in the offensive shuffle.

  • 5/24/12: For now, the Ravens are primarily having Paul Kruger lined up at Suggs' rush outside linebacker spot.
  • 5/24/12: Rookie 2nd round pick Kelechi Osemele took the majority of the first-string repetitions at left guard with Jah Reid rotating in at tackle.
