OWINGS MILLS -- The Baltimore Ravens terminated the contract of backup middle linebacker Nick Greisen on Thursday one year after signing him to a three-year, $4 million contract that included a $1 million signing bonus, according to NFL Players Association records.

The Ravens created $716,000 in salary-cap space with Greisen off the roster. Under the NFL salary-cap rules governing the rule of 51, though, it's a net savings of $331,000.

Griesen was due a $1.05 million base salary in 2009 and a $1.3 million base salary in 2010.

The Ravens are now close to $2.3 million under the salary cap, according to NFL Players Association figures.

By parting ways with Greisen, a stay-home style of inside linebacker, the Ravens are emphasizing a desire for speed at linebacker.

Besides All-Pro middle linebacker Ray Lewis, the Ravens have three other inside linebackers currently on the roster after Bart Scott signed with the New York Jets.

That includes Pro Bowl special-teams ace Brendon Ayanbadejo, former third-round draft pick Tavares Gooden, who missed his entire rookie season due to injuries, and emerging former undrafted free agent Jameel McClain, who also can play outside linebacker.

The move wasn't unexpected for Greisen as he was informed Monday of the pending transaction, according to his agent. The move wasn't processed until after Greisen took an exit physical.

According to NFL.com, Greisen registered 11 tackles last season in 14 games.

In 2007, Greisen started twice for Baltimore and recorded 30 tackles. For his seven-year NFL career, the former University of Wisconsin standout has 255 tackles and four sacks.

Aaron Wilson covers the Baltimore Ravens for the Carroll County Times and the Annapolis Capital.
