OWINGS MILLS -- Chris Carr is on the verge of signing with the Baltimore Ravens today after arriving in town Monday and touring the team's training complex.
The unrestricted free agent nickel cornerback and return man is scheduled to take a physical before lending his signature and finalizing a two-year, $5 million contract, a financial package that outbid the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Carr, who played last season for the Tennessee Titans, is expected to assume punt return and kickoff return duties. He's also expected to immediately contend for playing time behind starting cornerbacks Domonique Foxworth and Fabian Washington.
A former undrafted free agent from Boise State, the native of Reno, Nev., played for Ravens secondary coach Chuck Pagano during a previous stint with the Oakland Raiders.
Carr ranked fourth in the NFL last season with a 28.1 kickoff return average. He also registered 31 tackles and one interception in two starts.
NOTES: Veteran cornerback Samari Rolle wasn't released Monday. His exit physical wasn't completed before the end of the league transaction deadline.
He could be released as soon as today, which would create $4.1 million in salary-cap space. Rolle's agent, Peter Schaffer, told 24x7 on Friday that he anticipates the Ravens will grant Rolle's request to be released.
Former Ravens linebacker Bart Scott, who signed a $48 million contract with the New York Jets, predicted that Rolle will eventually join him, strong safety Jim Leonhard and defensive end Marques Douglas in New York playing for former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, the Jets' new coach. The Jets are still considering Ravens free agent reserve cornerback Corey Ivy. ...
The Ravens and the Baltimore Orioles are promoting in tandem the Ravens' 12th annual Spring Football Festival on April 25 from 3 to 7 p.m. at M&T Bank Stadium followed by the Orioles' 7:05 p.m. home game against the Texas Rangers at Camden Yards.
The Ravens' event includes players signing autographs, a locker room tour, concessions and being able to view the NFL draft live in the stadium. Purchasing a packaged ticket grants admission to the draft event as well as the baseball game.
