OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens linebacker Bart Scott tried to wipe some of the hot sauce off a minor controversy surrounding his encounter with New Orleans Saints rookie running back Reggie Bush, insisting that he didn’t intentionally try to hurt the former Heisman Trophy winner.
Bush left the game with an ankle injury after Scott tackled him and flipped his ankle in a dismissive gesture.
“I think it’s just a misunderstanding,” Scott said.
Following the Ravens' 35-22 victory Sunday, Scott said that Bush tried to take a cheap shot on him on an interception with the No. 2 overall draft pick from USC striking him in the back of his head. From that point onward, Scott said it became personal and joked: “I put a little hot sauce on the ankle.”
Plus, Scott said the high-profile rookie reminded him of a “little boy running home scared from school.”
Days later, Scott said his hot sauce remark was merely a reference to being in New Orleans and its spicy food.
“New image?” Scott said Wednesday when asked about accusations that he’s a dirty player. “I don’t have one. Anybody that knows me knows I have a tremendous respect for the game and the history of the game and I would never take a cheap shot on anybody.
“I heard a statement that he didn’t think it was an intentional play, and the ankle was already hurting. I wish him a speedy recovery.”
Bush is expected to return against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Meanwhile, Scott, who wasn’t flagged by officials, said he hasn’t heard from the league office and doesn't expect to be fined. “Not at all, I didn’t receive a penalty,” he said. “I don’t know it would be warranted for a suspension.”
TRAINING ROOM: Nickel back Corey Ivy practiced on a limited basis for the first time since suffering a lacerated kidney against the Denver Broncos. He’s listed as questionable and missed portions of team drills.
Wide receiver Clarence Moore (foot) and tight end Quinn Sypniewski (neck ) are questionable and missed part of practice. Safeties Dawan Landry (knee) and Gerome Sapp (thigh) are probable along with linebacker Adalius Thomas (neck).
Wide receiver Mark Clayton left Sunday’s game with a tight left hamstring, but practiced without a setback and declared himself ready to start against the Cincinnati Bengals.
QUICK HITS: Landry, a fifth-round draft pick, has intercepted three passes in the past two games and returned a touchdown against the Saints. “All the credit goes to the young man and his professionalism and the work ethic he takes on the field,” defensive coordinator Rex Ryan said. “Obviously, he’s been a huge plus.” … Undrafted rookie cornerback Ronnie Prude has two interceptions and a touchdown in brief stints in the nickel package. “It’s just a testament to the guys who find Ronnie Prude, a guy that can come out and make big plays,” Scott said. “He’s got what, 10 plays, two picks and a touchdown. I’ll take those numbers.” … Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, the former Ravens defensive coordinator, has noticed a difference in the offense since Brian Billick took over play-calling duties after firing offensive coordinator Jim Fassel. “He has gotten totally involved, the buck stops here,” Lewis said. “I think that sense of direction is really what the guys were clamoring about or looking for, and he has given them that sense of drive and direction.”
