RAVENS NOTEBOOK: Tavares Gooden out four to six weeks with shoulder injury

OWINGS MILLS -- Baltimore Ravens inside linebacker Tavares Gooden suffered a dislocated left shoulder during Sunday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and is out four to six weeks, a magnetic resonance imaging exam revealed.

Gooden injured his shoulder during the second quarter of a 15-10 defeat while covering a punt.

Gooden's left arm was in a sling after the game.

He's expected to get a second opinion on his shoulder before any decisions are made regarding his status.

“I just landed funny,” Gooden said after the game. “It’s a little shoulder deal. Right now, I don’t know what it is. I’m just praying. That’s all I can do.”

Gooden has been filling an important pass coverage role on third downs in the Ravens' nickel package. Now, it's unclear who the Ravens will utilize in that role.

Meanwhile, Ravens coach John Harbaugh indicated that offensive tackle Jared Gaither is unlikely to play this week due to his lingering thoracic disc injury.

Gaither has been sidelined since training camp with the injury and has sought second opinions for the condition, which has caused back spasms.

"Jared has been in a different situation," Harbaugh said during his weekly radio program. "It's been tough on us, and tough on him. The injury was supposed to take two to six weeks, at most. Six weeks is coming up this Wednesday. He's been doing a little bit better, but I don't anticipate him being ready to play this week. I know he's working very hard to get it back. Our fingers are crossed, but we're not sure where it's at."

PRACTICE SQUAD MOVES: The Ravens have cut cornerback David Pender and offensive tackle Devin Tyler from the practice squad.

A former Temple University player who was briefly with the Arizona Cardinals, Tyler was signed during training camp.

Pender was recently signed to the practice squad after being cut by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Ravens are expected to sign two players to fill out their eight-man practice squad prior to today's practice.

DEFENSIVE BACK AUDITION:  The Ravens tried out the following players on Tuesday: former Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders cornerback John Bowie, former Browns cornerback Coye Francies and former Indianapolis Colts seventh-round cornerback and kick returner Ray Fisher.

Bowie, 26, played collegiately at the University of Cincinnati.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder is a former Oakland Raiders fourth-round draft pick, selected in 2007 with a pick acquired from the New England Patriots in exchange for wide receiver Randy Moss.

He has recorded two tackles in five NFL games.

Bowie was placed on injured reserve with the Raiders last year and was given an injury settlement last November.

He was signed by the Browns to  reserve-future contract in February, but was waived in June before being resigned and waived again on Aug. 31.

Francies is a former Cleveland Browns sixth-round draft pick from San Jose State.

Drafted last year, Francies  started at Oregon State before being kicked off the team and transferring to San Jose State and emerging as a second-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection.

The 6-foot,181-pounder fell in the draft due to a 4.63 time in the 40-yard dash.

The Browns cut him on Sept. 3.

Fisher was released by the Colts after the preseason.

Earlier this summer, Fisher agreed to terms on a four-year, $1.83 million deal.

Fisher received a signing bonus slightly higher than $41,500.

Fisher is a converted wide receiver who ran the 40-yard dash unofficially in the low 4.3 range at his Pro Day workout.

The honorable-mention All-Big Ten conference selection also registered a 38-inch vertical leap and a 10-2 broad jump.

The 5-foot-8, 171-pounder is being evaluated as a returner and at cornerback.

Fisher played three seasons at wide receiver before making the transition to cornerback as a senior.

In 19 starts at wide receiver, the Cleveland native caught 118 passes for 1,070 yards and nine touchdowns.

He returned 18 kickoffs for 650 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 36.1 yards per return and 9.7 yards on 17 punt returns.

His kick return average led the nation and set a Big Ten single-season record.

In six starts on defense, Fisher registered 49 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
