OWINGS MILLS — Syracuse University imposing wide receiver Mike Williams is scheduled to visit the Baltimore Ravens on Monday.

Williams conducted a private workout for the Miami Dolphins on Thursday.

Williams was the top wide receiver in the Big East Conference until a split with the program in November with coach Doug Marrone insisting that the Buffalo native quit the team.

Williams was adamant during an interview at the NFL scouting combine that he didn't quit the team and said he detailed the mysterious circumstances of how he left the program to NFL teams during meetings.

"I didn't quit," Williams said during the NFL scouting combine. "I just want everybody to know I didn't quit."

What's clear is Williams had a serious falling-out with Marrone that ended his tenure with the Orangemen.

Williams is an imposing wide receiver with athleticism and ability to run after the catch.

Williams caught 49 passes for 746 yards and six touchdowns in seven games before his exit from the program.

For his career, he registered 133 receptions for 2,044 yards and 20 touchdowns.

As a sophomore, he caught a career-high 60 passes for 837 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The 22-year-old also set a Syracuse record in 2007 when he caught at least one touchdown pass in nine consecutive games.

The athletic 6-foot-2, 220-pounder once beat NBA player Donte Green in a slam-dunk contest on the Syracuse campus.

He has been projected anywhere from the second round to the fourth round.

Williams didn't shy away from discussing some of his issues at Syracuse, which included a suspension for an academic violation and another unspecified infraction where he broke team rules.

"I want to let them know that I'm a nice person, I'm a good person," Williams said. "School was just my problem. I had bad judgment when I was young.

"School has been my problem, I want to let them know I can play football and be there for that team."

RAVENS WANT TO KEEP NGATA IN THE FOLD: The Ravens have made their intentions clear that they want to sign Pro Bowl defensive tackle Haloti Ngata to a long-term contract extension.

Ngata is entering the final year of his five-year, $11.9 million contract and is due a $996,250 base salary in 2010.

Negotiations haven't been launched, but both sides are motivated to eventually work something out.

"I don't want to speak out of turn, but nobody would disagree with the fact that Haloti Ngata is a guy that we have every intention of making a Raven forever," coach John Harbaugh said during the annual league meetings. "You can't say in this league nothing is certain obviously, but I know Haloti wants to be a Raven and I know he wants to do a long-term contract just as soon as he possibly can. ..

"There are some rules that make it a little bit tough this year. I'm still hopeful it can get done, if not this year next year. I'm a coach. I want to see it done as soon as possible and I think Ozzie Newsome would, too. Haloti, and there are some other guys too we want to get signed up as soon as we can for as long as we can."

PREPARING FOR THE DRAFT: The Ravens attended Mississippi State linebacker Jamar Chaney's Pro Day workout. The 6-foot-1, 241-pounder was timed by NFL scouts between 4.45 and 4.48 seconds, making him the fastest linebacker draft prospect.

Ravens wide receivers coach Jim Hostler attended a workout for University of Connecticut wide receiver Marcus Easley. New York Jets receivers coach Henry Ellard was there, too.

Easley is a former walk-on who earned a scholarship heading into his senior year when he led the team with 48 receptions for 893 yards and eight touchdowns.

MARYLAND CORNERBACK DRAWING INTEREST: University of Maryland speedy cornerback Nolan Carroll is scheduled to visit the Pittsburgh Steelers on March 31.

Carroll is also scheduled to visit the Dolphins on March 29.

He worked out for the Dolphins on Thursday.

Carroll has already conducted private workouts with the New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns.

The 5-11, 204-pounder bench pressed 225 pounds 17 times at the Terrapins' campus Pro Day workout, also registering a 37 ½ inch vertical leap and a 4.39 time in the 40-yard dash.

Carroll missed the majority of last season with a broken leg after starting the first two games of the season, but has made a complete recovery.

He's projected as a middle to later-round draft pick, but his size-speed combination is definitely boosting his stock.

FOOTNOTE: The Ravens have re-signed exclusive-rights free agent running back Matthew Lawrence, who's recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
