OWINGS MILLS -- The Baltimore Ravens are intensifying their interest in University of Houston quarterback Kevin Kolb.

The senior passer has visited the Ravens' training complex and will also meet with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles. The Ravens are looking for a promising young developmental quarterback to groom behind aging starter Steve McNair.

Baltimore offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Rick Neuheisel attended Kolb's Pro Day workout on the Houston campus.

"I hate to speculate, but the Ravens have shown a lot of sincere interest," said Kolb's agent and former Oakland Raiders safety, Vann McElroy. "That's certainly a position that they're targeting. Ozzie Newsome is as good at what he does as anyone in the business. "They'll have a plan there to get someone to come in that has some youth and potential. Kevin fits that bill. He's shaping up to be in that top-four group of quarterbacks."

A four-year starter, Kolb was named the Conference USA Player of the Year after passing for 3,809 yards with 30 touchdowns and four interceptions on 67.6 percent accuracy.

As a junior, he passed for 3,258 yards and 19 touchdowns.

"I hear different teams think he has more upside than Brady Quinn," McElroy said. "He's a very good kid, totally committed to the cause. He resurrected that program.

"He's a smalltown guy who loves to hunt and fish. He didn't allow anything to bother him one bit. He's very positive. He's definitely a person that's on a mission."

Known as a pocket passer who spreads the football around liberally, Kolb is 6-foot-3, 230 pounds with 4.7 speed in the 40-yard dash.

"He's got the measurables, good size, good speed, can move," McElroy said. "He really has a good arm."

Aaron Wilson covers the Baltimore Ravens for the Carroll County Times in Westminster, Maryland.
