OWINGS MILLS -- The Baltimore Ravens plan to begin discussing a potential contract extension with Pro Bowl outside linebacker Terrell Suggs prior to the NFL draft next week, general manager Ozzie Newsome said.

Suggs is entering the final year of his five-year rookie contract. He's slated to be paid a $5 million base salary this season, an increase due to an escalator clause triggered by his 40th career sack last season against the Buffalo Bills.

"We want him to be a part of our future," Newsome said Monday afternoon. "He's a Pro Bowl player and he's one of the top pass rushers in the league, but he's an every-down player because he plays the run well."

A first-round draft pick in 2003 out of Arizona State, the 6-foot-3, 260-pounder registered 12 sacks as a rookie with subsequent totals of 10 1/2 sacks, eight sacks, and 9 1/2 sacks. He has three interceptions, 14 forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries.

The Ravens have a history of rewarding former first-round draft picks who have emerged as Pro Bowl selections, negotiating lucrative contract extensions for safety Ed Reed last year and tight end Todd Heap in 2005 before they began the final year of their respective rookie contracts.
