OWINGS MILLS -- Michigan State quarterback Drew Stanton has visited the Baltimore Ravens’ training complex, according to his agent.
The senior passer met with the Ravens at the Senior Bowl, NFL scouting combine, a campus workout attended by offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Rick Neuheisel and during a recent official prospect visit at the team’s headquarters, agent Drew Rosenhaus said Wednesday.
“Drew really loved meeting the Ravens organization, and it’s a good relationship,” Rosenhaus said. “I would love for him to eventually be their quarterback in a tandem with my running back, Willis McGahee.”
Stanton is a classic pocket passer at 6-foot-3, 226 pounds, but has also flashed 4.72 speed in the 40-yard dash.
His arm strength, size and mobility are regarded as strengths along with a fundamentally sound, over-the-top delivery, but his decision-making and field vision have drawn mixed reviews.
Stanton is a three-year starter who made the All-Big Ten Conference team as a junior when he completed 66.7 percent of his throws. However, he slumped to 61 percent accuracy as a senior for 1,807 yards, 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Confidence became an issue during the regular season, but Stanton seems to have gotten back on track during the postseason circuit.
“Several teams are very high on Drew,” Rosenhaus said. “The Ravens are one of them.”
Meanwhile, the Ravens had University of Pittsburgh quarterback Tyler Palko in for a visit Wednesday, according to his agent.
Palko lacks ideal size and arm strength at 6-1 1/2, 215 pounds, and only has 4.88 speed. Regarded as a second-day prospect, the left-handed senior is known for his leadership and decision-making.
A three-year starter, Palko completed 68.3 percent of his throws for 2,871 yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions last season. He registered a career-high 3,067 passing yards as a sophomore.
“Tyler is the consummate pro, he’s extremely serious and he’s the son of a Pennsylvania high school football coach,” said Ralph Cindrich, Palko’s agent, who also represents Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith, the Heisman Trophy winner who visited the Ravens earlier this month. “He’s been a leader and a competitor all his life. He's very dedicated and he knows this game inside and out.
“I’ve always thought with Baltimore and Brian Billick that they look for a guy who’s not going to lose the game for you because they already have so many pieces in place. Tyler fits into any system that requires the quarterback to be a little bit sharper.”
