Martin assigned court date in drug case
OWINGS MILLS -- Baltimore Ravens cornerback Derrick Martin was assigned a July 15 court date following his citation on a charge of drug abuse when police officers said he was holding three small bags of suspected marijuana Saturday at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Cleveland Police Lt. Thomas Stacho, who said he spoke with Ravens Director of Security Darren Sanders on Monday to confirm that it was Martin who was cited following a random TSA screening, said that Martin was given a ticket and a summons to appear in Cleveland Municipal Court.

Martin, 23, of Owings Mills, had initially told team officials that he was not cited. Martin has yet to comment on the incident publicly.

The maximum penalty for the minor misdemeanor is a $150 fine.

A native of Denver, the third-year defensive back was in Cleveland for a football camp.

Martin doesn't have a history of problems with the law or involvement in the NFL substance-abuse program.

However, this incident could potentially trigger increased scrutiny from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. A conviction or guilty plea could enter Martin in the first stage of the league's substance-abuse program.

The former sixth-round draft pick from Wyoming intercepted a career-high two passes in three starts last season as he appeared in every game last season for the Ravens.

Aaron Wilson covers the Baltimore Ravens for the Carroll County Times and the Annapolis Capital.
