The Beat with Aaron Wilson - Derrick Mason sticks up for Joe Flacco, defends quarterback

Written By:

The NFL season hasn’t been rescued yet from the labor dispute and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has already been mistaken for a convenient punching bag.

Pounded verbally by former NFL players Jamie Dukes and Bucky Brooks, Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Dhani Jones and Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley, Flacco has drawn heavy criticism.

Although Flacco has led the Ravens to three consecutive playoff appearances, Brooks said the Ravens are winning in spite of him not because of him.

Dukes accused Flacco of not working hard enough even though the former first-round draft pick has a reputation for putting in long hours at the office.

And Woodley predicted the Ravens will never win a Super Bowl in Flacco’s lifetime.

Ravens veteran wide receiver Derrick Mason has a pet theory on why Flacco has emerged as a popular target in NFL circles.

“When you’re good, people are scared of you,” Mason said during his youth football camp in Westminster.

“Honestly, that’s what I’ve seen. When people realize the potential that you have, they get very, very scared and then you see them scrambling to say bad things about the guy.

“Joe doesn’t care. He really doesn’t. For the Woodleys and the Dhani Jones and the rest of them, you see there aren’t no head coaches or general manager and no smart players saying Joe can’t play. The last thing you want to do is wake up a sleeping giant. Whether he says it or not, they’ve given him added fuel.”

Heading into his fourth NFL season, Flacco is the Ravens’ all-time passing leader with 10,206 yards, 60 touchdown passes, 878 completions and 1,416 attempts.

The 25-year-old New Jersey native has started every game of his career and has completed 62 percent of his throws for a respectable 87.9 quarterback rating with only 34 interceptions.

Including the playoffs since 2008, Flacco has a 36-19 record as a starter ranking behind only Indianapolis Colts star Peyton Manning (38-15) and ahead of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees (35-16) and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (35-14). The Ravens are 22-3 when Flacco has at least a 95.0 quarterback rating.

During the Ravens’ last 30 wins, Flacco has thrown 43 touchdowns and eight interceptions for a 102.4 rating.

What he hasn’t done, though, is lead the Ravens to a Super Bowl, going 4-3 in the postseason.

“Yeah, Joe is taking that final step,” Mason said of Flacco, who recently married his high school sweetheart. “Joe is going to be all right. Each year, the best thing he’s done is matured in the game. Joe is a mature young man.

“Each year, Joe hasn’t taken a step back. Each and every year, he’s gotten better. That’s all you can ask of your quarterback. Right now, he’s ready to be the leader of not just the offense, but the entire team.”

Last season, Flacco completed 62.6 percent of his passes for a career-high 3,622 yards and 25 touchdowns with 10 interceptions for a 93.6 rating.

Ravens free agent wide receiver Donte' Stallworth recently stuck up for Flacco's play and stoic personality.

"I like Joe," Stallworth said. "I think from the time I got there he made a lot of progress. He's not a fiery guy. Sometimes, those guys at the quarterback position tend to be criticized for whatever reason when they're not that fiery or cursing at people.

“Joe is cool. He goes about his business. He works hard. He's the first guy in and one of the last guys out of the locker room. I definitely appreciate the position he's in. I can't see why some people are on him. He'll be fine. He knows that. He's not too far away from that championship. He's a competitor. He'll come out swinging."

NOTE: Mason thinks Woodley made a mistake by singling out the Ravens and neglecting to mention the rest of the AFC teams.

“There’s a lot of teams in our way, the Jets, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Tennessee, Jacksonville, Indianapolis, New England,” Mason said. “We’re thinking bigger than Pittsburgh. We’re thinking past Pittsburgh because you can’t just look at one team and forget about the others.

“Woodley is just looking at us. That tells you how scared he is of the Baltimore Ravens. You didn’t just take a dagger at us. You took a dagger at everybody else. He’s looking through a microscope; he’s looking through a funnel. He has to see the big picture.”

To Matt- Did you read my line "I AM NOT A STEELER FAN". The Ravens article had to do with taking the next step in recent years and that is FLACCO years.It's not about someone else, it's about this team the last three years.Yes there are 16 games and 14 are against other teams. bUT LOSING TO THE sTEELERS EACH YEAR MAKES THE RAVENS A WILD CARD TEAM WITH no home games! You might want to look up who those games( THAT ADDED UP TO SO MANY WINS) have been against the last three years and HOW MANY WINNING PLAYOFF TEAMS THE RAVENS UNDER FLACCO HAVE BEATEN.While your checking check FLACCO"S RECORD,QB RATING, INTS COMPARE TO TDS AGAINST ALL TOP TEAMS. I write a column on a website entitled "RAVE REVIEW" not Steeler notes! dOES THAT STILL MAKE YOU THINK WHO i LIKE?
Mort- Boller was laST YOUNG QUARTERBACK WE HAD THAT FAILED IN A 4 YEAR PERIOD. IS jOE BETTER, SURE BUT PEOPLE THAT ARE fLACCO BACKERS ALWAYS POINT OUT EXCUSES WHY HE HAS NOT GOT HIS TEAM TO A SUPER BOWL BOLLER GOT MENTIONED BY ME BECAUSE HE DID NOT GET US TO A SUPER BOWL EITHER. DON'T PUT WORDS IN MY MOUTH I DID NOT SAY HE IS NOT THE ANSWER YET, I SAID HE MUST DO BETTER. WHO DID I WANT,ROGERS, OF GREEN BAY. I AM SURE YOU KNOW THAT WE PASSSED ON HIM IN THE DRAFT A FEW YEARS AGO. NEXT WOULD HAVE BEEN EDWARDS OF TAMPA, IS THAT ENOUGH OF QBS WE COULD HAVE DRAFTED THAT ARE FAR BETTER?
THE RAVENS SINCE FLACCO HAS BEEN HERE HAVE NEVER HAD A HOME PLAYOFF GAME. THE LAST ONE WAS 2006 LOSING TO THE COLTS UNDER MCHAIR'S CHOKE PERFORMANCE WHEN, YES THEY WON MANY REGULAR SEASON GAMES. TEAMS THAT WIN MOST PLAYOFF GAMES HAVE HOME GAMES AND QUALITY PERFORMANCES FROM THEIR QUARTERBACKS. RAY LEWIS SAID IT BEST ALONG WITH SUGGS AT THIS YEARS PRO BOWL. "YOU CANNOT TURN THE BALL OVER IN THE PLAYOFFS"! IS FLACCO THE LONG TERM ANSWER? THE OWNER THINKS SO BUT THEY THOUGHT BOLLER,MCNAIR,BLAKE WERE QBS TOO THAT COULD WIN A SUPER BOWL!

@JWS -
"There are always excuses like the millions of them why Kyle Boller never won." - Wow, the fact that you even bring up Kyle Boller's name in a discussion about Joe is laughable. Joe will be fine - you don't have to support the team (I couldn't make out if you're a Ravens fan or not). No one is forcing you to. So according to you, Joe Flacco isn't the answer. Ok, fair enough - who do you want to lead this team? Should we spend our first round pick next year on a QB? Trade up and get one of the top picks? Or sign a veteran with the intention of starting him? I will say this - Joe Flacco is this teams franchise QB. I personally think he's gotten better every year. I think this year he'll be even better. If the entire team plays better (yes, the team lost in Pittsburgh during last year's playoffs, not just Joe...), we have a very good shot at going to the playoffs for a 4th consecutive year, which has never been done in franchise history. I'm supporting Joe and think we're very lucky to have him as our QB. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I respectfully disagree.

@JWS

I believe you have missed a large part of the point. Its not just about beating Pittsburgh. Yes, the Steelers have been in the Ravens way for the last FOUR years, the Ravens struggles vs them extend beyond the time that Joe has been here, but the point is if its not them it will be someone else. Mason's point is that the Ravens have to get by everyone that is in there way to get to that coveted Superbowl. What is the point in getting past the Steelers in the divisional round if they in turn lose the AFC championship game to the Jets or the Superbowl to the Packers? The Ravens need to finish in the big games, PERIOD. As a fan, I am not interested in just having bragging rights over the Steelers I want them over EVERY NFL team.

Last I checked there 16 games, in the regular season. We only play Pittsburgh twice. We could win both game vs. Pitt and still not qualify for a playoff spot and shot a Superbowl.

There are also 11 other teams in the post season. And atleast 3 games before you are crowned Superbowl champs. The Steelers can only be one of the teams you have to beat.

Let us state facts not stats. Stats are based on wins that depend on team's defenses,offensive players and coaching. Take any quaterback in the NFL that has been a quality quaterback like Drew Brees put him on the Ravens and put Joe Flacco on the Saints during the last three years, what would their "STATS" then have been? Brees must be better than any one since he won a SUPER BOWL with his record and team.
So stats are not important. Winning playoff games and despite Mason's comments beating the Steelers which Joe and this team has not done the last three years matters and is the only way the Ravens will ever get to a SUPER BOWL!Pittsburgh with less wins but have won two SUPER BOWLS under BIG BEN(he was suspended and that is why he has less wins but more division titles) and been to three SUPER BOWLS all because they have beaten Baltimore. I am not a Steeler fan so these facts are based on truth of what has happened. There is no room for excuses starting this year,Flacco must lead and be a part of getting us to the SUPER BOWL with an aging defense and Mason in his last year. There are always excuses like the millions of them why Kyle Boller never won. This year the Ravens at this point have a very weak offensive line, several young receivers and a control freak offensive coach. Can they under Joe take the next step even if they win 10-12 regular saeson games? We will
see!
