OWINGS MILLS -- Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith visited the Baltimore Ravens' training complex this week as team officials met with one of the most scrutinized players in the draft.

The Outland Trophy award winner also visited the Cincinnati Bengals this week, according to his representative.

Smith has upcoming visits scheduled with the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins and the Detroit Lions.

A 6-foot-4, 332-pound blocker once regarded as a candidate to be drafted first overall by the Lions, Smith's stock has taken a major hit since the season ended.

Smith left the NFL scouting combine after not working out and didn't inform NFL and combine officials of his decision to leave early.

Then, Smith ran shirtless and displayed a flabby physique at his campus Pro Day workout.

Several agents who attended the workout said that NFL scouts and other players were snickering as Smith ambled around the football field.

Plus, Smith was suspended from playing in the Sugar Bowl for a violation of team rules widely reported to stem from unauthorized contact with an agent.

Regardless of his series of poor decisions, Smith is a talented football player who dominated the competition in the Southeastern Conference.

At his Pro Day, even though he was visibly out of shape, Smith still ran the 40-yard dash in 5.28 seconds. Only managing 19 repetitions of 225 pounds in the bench press test, though, shows that Smith needs to hit the weight room hard.

Despite all the red flags and questions about his maturity and work ethic, Smith is still expected to be drafted at some point during the first round.

There's a ton of video of Smith manhandling defensive linemen at the point of attack.

NOTES: North Carolina wide receiver Hakeem Nicks visited the Ravens on Friday, according to his agent. .. The Ravens announced Friday night that rookies, quarterbacks and selected veterans are scheduled to report to training camp July 27 at McDaniel College with the entire team set to report July 29.

Aaron Wilson covers the Baltimore Ravens for the Carroll County Times and the Annapolis Capital.
