SNEAK PREVIEW: Ravens v. Cardinals
A Big Pryce to Pay ~ Trevor Pryce has tallied 78 sacks (-531.5 yards) in 10 seasons and has consistently been one of the NFL’s top pass-rushers thanks in part to what Bart Scott describes as “a patented slap-rip move.” Last season, Pryce registered 13 sacks -- including 6.5 in the last 6 games -- and a team-best 73 QB hits. Since entering the league, Pryce has posted 11 games where he records at least 2 sacks, with 3 of those contests coming in 2006 (vs. Cle., 12/17; vs. Pit., 11/26 and vs. Atl., 11/19). The Ravens were 9-0 last season when Pryce tallied a sack and are 1-0 this year. His presence will be missed while he recovers from a broken wrist.

Familiar Flocks ~ There are some interesting connections between the Ravens and Cardinals organizations…First-year Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt served as Baltimore’s TEs coach from 1997-98. He then faced the Ravens 12 times after moving on to Pittsburgh as the Steelers’ TEs coach from 2001-03 and the offensive coordinator from 2004-06…Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan served on Arizona’s coaching staff in 1994 as the LBs coach, and in 1995, coached the D-line…The Ravens and Cardinals swapped hometown products in the 1st round of 2003 NFL Draft. With the 10th pick, the Ravens selected OLB Terrell Suggs, an Arizona State product from the Phoenix area. Arizona selected Baltimore native and City College grad Bryant Johnson, a WR from Penn State, with the 17th pick…The Ravens-Cardinals matchup is a star-studded showing of University of Miami alumni. The contest features the Ravens’ LB Ray Lewis, S Ed Reed, RB Willis McGahee, and Cardinals RB Edgerrin James and CB Antrel Rolle. Each player entered the league as a 1st-round draft pick…Ravens LBs coach Jeff FitzGerald as a member of the Cardinals’ coaching staff from 2000-03. He was the team’s quality control coach in 2000 before coaching the LBs for the next 3 seasons…

Outside the Lines with Terrell Suggs

Where does the nickname “Sizzle” come from?

“My cousin D’Marr played basketball at Idaho State and everyone called him ‘D-Sizzle.’ So, when I got to Arizona State, my name became ‘T-Sizzle.’ That was around when Snoop Dog brought the ‘izzle’ and the Ebonics into the lingo. It just kind of stuck. Terrell Suggs: T-Sizzle.”

Do you like the nickname?

“I like it. That’s the thing, where I come from you want to achieve a nickname in football. That means you can play a little bit.”

What’s the best show on TV right now?

“There’s so much. I watch Family Guy every night; I can’t miss it. I also watch Monk whenever I can. Oh, I can’t forget America’s Next Top Model. I’ve got to look at Tyra Banks and all those beautiful women.”

What’s one thing very few people know about Sizzle?

“I still faithfully collect action figures. I love toys. I think it was something that started when I was little. I guess because I couldn’t afford all the toys when I was little, so now almost every day I walk into a toy store. I just have to go. If they’ve got something new, I’m going to buy it. I just have to buy toys.”

You went to high school in Arizona followed by 3 years at Arizona State. When’s the next time you’ll be back in Arizona?

“Hopefully, that’ll be in Phoenix, Feb. 3, 2008.”

Ravens’ performance v. Cardinals

K Matt Stover

In 4 games against Arizona, Stover is perfect on all 9 of his FGAs and 7 PATs. He owns a 3-1 record against the Cardinals, while connecting on 3 FGs from 40-plus yards. Stover has multiple FGs in 3 games against Arizona, including a 4-for-4 performance (10/12/03), which marks Stover’s 2nd highest
FG total in a single game.

LB Ray Lewis

In 3 games against the Cardinals, Lewis has posted 43 tackles, including 35 solo, 1 PD and 1 FR. Lewis averages 14.3 tackles per game against Arizona and has posted double-digit tackles in every game (14, 15 and 14).

CB Chris McAlister

In 2 games against the Cardinals, McAlister has 9 tackles, including 8 solo, 5 PD and 2 INTs. McAlister set a career high with 2 INTs against Arizona in 2003, 1 of which he returned 83 yards for a TD (2nd-longest return of his career).

GROUND GAME FACTOIDS

In their last 33 home games, the Ravens’ have only allowed 2 100-yard rushers: Houston’s Domanick Williams (formerly Davis) - 155 on 12/4/05 and KC’s Priest Holmes - 125 on 10/4/04...Baltimore has not permitted a 100-yard rusher at home in their last 11 games...The Ravens have only allowed 6 rushing TDs in their last 65 home games...Since 2003, the Ravens have allowed an NFL-best 28 rushing TDs in 66 games. The next best “D” is Tampa’s, which has yielded 37.

Baltimore’s return units have been stellar to open the season. The Ravens’ 32.7-yard KOR average ranks 3rd in the NFL, and the 32.0-yard line average starting field postion is 4th. Baltimore has KOR longs of 47 (B.J. Sams) and 61 (Yamon Figurs) yards. They have also racked up a 13.0-yard PR average, thanks in part to Ed Reed’s 62-yard TD return at Cincy in Week 1.
