Week 9 NFL News & Notes Week 9 NFL News & Notes
Hall of Fame nominees were named for the class of 2009 and Shannon Sharpe and Rod Woodson were among them. While both have ties to the Ravens and won a championship here, neither will enter the Hall as a Raven.  The will go in as a Bronco and a Steeler respectively. Whether the are Hall worthy is a debate for another article but it would be a huge surprise if both are elected this year.

Cardinals, Tim Hightower will take over as the starting running back over Edgerrin James, this move will be made in another week or so …. Ravens, The Ravens won their 100th regular season game this past week with their 29-10 victory over the Raiders, their all time regular season record is 100-98-1….Bengals, Former Bengal Ken Anderson who is the Steelers quarterbacks coach now is the leading candidate to replace Marvin Lewis as head coach for 2009….Browns….TE Kellen Winslow returns, seems all is well with him and Phil Savage, the Browns are playing better as well….Cowboys, Brooks Bollinger could get some snaps this week against the Giants if Brad Johnson is not able to move the ball….Broncos, Running back Michael Pittman and TE Tony Scheffler are still hurting  and may miss this week’s game against the Dolphins even though they had a week to rest with their bye week….

Lions, Detroit will be one of Raven defensive coordinator Rex Ryan’s stops on his interview tour this off season for a head coaching position, Rod Marinelli will not be the coach next season…. Packers, appear to be healthy for their game against the perfect Titans, they have fought injuries all year long, but still remain weak against the run, the strength of Tennessee….Colts, keep an eye on Peyton Manning, Trent Dilfer did a great job on taking a closer view of Manning’s passing release on NFL Network and it appears he is not throwing the ball the same….Chiefs, They are waiting to hear from the league about Larry Johnson’s status after another run in with the law, should be suspended for a game or so, but he will appeal….Vikings, They are saying both Kevin and Pat Williams will play this week although the team is waiting to hear from the league on both players who tested positively for banned substances….

Patriots, this theme is getting old fast, Vince Wilfork should be suspended and fined for his elbow shot taken at Jay Cutler last Monday, still have not heard as of this writing, but there will some penalty here, also on a real football note, the Patriot backfield is a mess, the backs themselves do not even know who is playing from series to series….Saints, they as well are waiting to see where the steroid investigation takes them with Deuce McAllister….Raiders, this will be another stop on the Rex Ryan interview tour, an awkward one at that considering his brother is defensive coordinator, but a scenario with Rex as head coach and his brother Rob as defensive coordinator is possible….Steelers,  wide receiver Santonio Holmes returns after sitting for one game following a drug possession arrest, the league will suspend him after they get all the facts….Rams, Jim Haslett is coaching for his job since he has replaced Scott Linehan, but this will be another interview stop for Rex Ryan….

San Diego, Head coach Norv Turner fired defensive coordinator, Ted Cottrell, and elevated linebackers coach Ron Rivera, they could not blame everything on Shawn Merriman not being there, if Turner does not get San Diego deep into the playoffs then he will be fired and this will be the top place on Rex Ryan’s list to coach, keep in mind that while he will be a top candidate, and remember where you heard these names first, Pete Carmichael, offensive coordinator for the Saints and Curtis Johnson, wide receivers coach for the Saints, they will make the interview stops as well and there will be a lot to pick from this off season….49’ers, Mike Singletary demoted JT O’Sullivan and now will start Shaun Hill at quarterback, Hill has 101.5 passer rating, but O’Sullivan was offensive coordinator Mike Martz’s choice, could be a rift here, both will interview for this job after the season, have also heard Mike Holmgren’s name, feeling here is that this will be Martz’s spot….

Seahawks, Matt Hasselbeck does not need surgery on the bulging disc in his back causing him leg problems but he will miss another game, Seneca Wallace gets the start, we may have seen the last of Hasselbeck for the year, but they will have to fight to keep him off the field, he wants to play….Redskins, They have allowed the least amount of passing yards at home this year, while Jeff Fisher is out in front in coach of the year consideration now, Jim Zorn is close behind, also Redskins’ offensive coordinator Sherman Smith, his backfield mate on the first Seahawk team in 1976 will also be interviewed for head coaching positions.
