NFL News & Notes: Ryan wins Rookie of the Year Award NFL News & Notes: Ryan wins Rookie of the Year Award

Cardinals, Kurt Warner broke the team record for touchdown passes in a season with thirty, breaking Charley Johnson’s and Neil Lomax’s record of 28 scores each but for them to win their first home playoff game since 1947 they will have to run effectively; they were last in the NFL with less than 74 yards a game on the ground, veteran Edgerrin James could be the answer this weekend against a Falcons’ run defense that allowed 127 yards a game rushing…Falcons, they are three point favorites on the road against the Cardinals this week and they are 3-6 on the road in playoff games; wide receiver Roddy White set the franchise mark for receiving yards in a season with 1,382 breaking Alfred Jenkins record of 1,358 set in 1981; Matt Ryan was named NFL Offensive Rookie Of The Year…Ravens, contrary to television media reports here in Baltimore, the Ravens won the tie breaker for the Wild Card with the Patriots based on a better conference record 8-4 to 7-5, WBAL television needs better research for their 11 o’clock sports report...

Bills, no word yet on head coach Dick Jauron’s future. Rumor has it that aging owner Ralph Wilson was ready to make a move after their loss to the Jets a couple of weeks ago and blamed terrible play calling for the defeat…Panthers, believe center Ryan Kalil should have made the Pro Bowl. The Panthers allowed just 19 sacks and have one of the best rushing games in the league. Kalil makes all the line calls – follow his play during the  playoffs, he rarely if ever makes a mistake or misses a block…Bears, Chicago will be one of the front runners to sign free agent Matt Cassell…Browns, expect owner Randy Lerner to speak with every prospective coach available with a pulse now that he has fired Romeo Crennel and Phil Savage. Lerner will try to hire Scott Pioli away from the Patriots to run the front office, then the coaching interviews will start. Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz is being mentioned as the leading candidate to replace Crennel

Lions, the Fords will interview Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo during the Giants bye week to replace the fired Rod Marinelli. The Browns and Rams also want to interview him; Lions tied the 1950 Colts by allowing sixty three touchdowns this year, the third most in NFL history, only the 1981 Colts and the 1966 Giants allowed more…Colts, TE Dallas Clark broke the team record of Hall of Famer John Mackey for his  TE receiving yardage record set in 1966. Clark had 848 yards (11 ypc) and 6 TD’s in fifteen games with more liberal passing rules while Mackey had 829 yards (17 ypc) to go with 9 scores in 14 games…Chiefs, they want to trade disgruntled running back Larry Johnson, if he stays or is traded the Chiefs will take a $8 million cap hit.  Word is they will accept a 2nd and 5th choice for him…Dolphins, in their last playoff appearance the Dolphins lost to the Ravens in Miami, 20-3, the Ravens last playoff win.  The Ravens held the Dolphins to 46 yards rushing, Terry Allen had 109 yards on the ground plus a score for the Ravens; Quarterback Chad Pennington will be back as the starter for Miami next season…Vikings, Vikings will host the Eagles Sunday, their first home playoff game since beating the Saints 34-16 in the 2000 playoffs

Giants, they signed former Dolphin wide receiver Derek Hagan to the roster to take the spot of the injured Reuben Droughns...Jets, four losses in their last 5 games cost Eric Mangini his coaching job; the Jets will try and hire a high profile coach, possibly Bill Parcells if the Dolphins are sold…Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger should be ready for their home playoff game next week…49’ers, Mike Singletary will be back as head coach but offensive coordinator Mike Martz will not return; the real story behind San Francisco’s turn around was the promotion of veteran Shaun Hill to starting quarterback, he had 14 touchdowns in 8 starts…Titans, defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch will be able to play in the Titans first playoff game which would be against the Ravens if the Ravens beat the Dolphins.
