Press Box Live delivers for lacrosse fans
Since the Men’s Division I lacrosse tournament started two weeks ago I must say I have been a bit disappointed by the coverage on local radio. Granted, I can’t listen to every station all day and night, but I think I hit the local dial enough to get a good feel for what’s being talked about each week.
By far the best coverage I heard was on the Sunday morning installment of Press Box Live hosted by Paul Mittermeier and Matt Zenitz. The lead topic was the Johns Hopkins win over Delaware in the semi-finals and the upcoming championship game against Duke on Memorial Day. Even lacrosse fans don’t expect the sport to get big chunks of radio time often, but this weekend was different since JHU was gunning for the upset over number one seed Duke in their back yard at M&T Bank Stadium. It was clear from the comments by Mittermeier and Zenitz they had watched the games on Saturday and were honestly looking forward to seeing a local school with a chance to win a national title. Well done gentlemen! This fan says, “Thank you!”
Lambrecht scores with his lacrosse coverage
Hats off to Baltimore Sun writer Gary Lambrecht for his continual fine writing on college lacrosse. His profile on Delaware middie Alex Smith and his piece on the season long progression of the Johns Hopkins defensive unit were both great reads. The MW thinks Mr. Lambrecht is one of the best lax writers around.
One year and counting for the Anita Marks show
Are congratulations really in order for Marks celebrating the one year anniversary of her show in Baltimore? Is her show any better now compared to when she first started in Charm City? I still hear a lot more time given to national topics and much less time given to callers compared to other local sports talk shows. MW is curious if she will interview any Hopkins coaches or players this week now that they have won the national championship.
Steve Davis on Michael Vick
I find myself listening to Steve Davis on WBAL more and more. I must say one of the funniest things I have heard in a while was last week when Davis said, “Michael Vick marches to the beat of a different drummer, on a different planet.”
WNST carries the torch for the depressed Orioles fan
This time of year you can count on three things in the Baltimore sports scene; Ravens fans counting down the days until the start of training camp, Johns Hopkins making the NCAA LAX Tourney and Nestor Aparicio ripping the Orioles. Although Nestor can sometimes come off as a bit whiny, his heart is in the right place and nobody cares more about the Orioles and the Baltimore sports community. It is quite an experience to listen when Aparicio throws bomb after bomb at owner Peter Angelos and the current state of the team. If you happen to be listening to WNST and you hear Nestor is coming on for a segment, stay tuned.
Something you should never hear discussed on sports talk radio
Tell me if I am crazy, but when I tune into a local sports talk radio show I expect to hear local sports talk first and national sports talk second. It’s safe to say any other topic should really be off the radar. So why did I hear the topic of why Rosie O’Donnell left “The View” being discussed last week? I ask you this as an honest question: “Was there nothing to be said on the Orioles home stand, the recent Ravens OTA, the then upcoming lacrosse finals…or even the NBA playoffs?”
I think you and I both know the answer.
