Anyone who has followed this site or my blog for any amount of time knows that I love the Ravens. There are many journalists who wouldn’t admit that out of fear that it might jeopardize their journalistic integrity. I happen to believe you can be objective and a fan at the same time – and admit it.
Closet fandom doesn’t sit well with me.
Recently I took pause to reflect upon the season as both a journalist and a fan. Sometimes it’s difficult to separate the two.
Ravens Director of Player Personnel Eric DeCosta once said to me that I write like a coach might write. He said when “we” do well you find a weakness in the game as part of an effort to get better. A coach might prefer to break you down when things are going well so that no one rests on their laurels. Need a little shower on your parade? I’ve got it!
Conversely if the Ravens performed poorly, I’ll find the silver lining and build on in order to learn from the loss, move on and hopefully get better.
I respect Eric as a family man, friend and an NFL personnel guy so it’s only natural that I’m flattered that he cares enough to read this blog and share those opinions.
That said, I think I have failed as a coach’s writer this season and it took a rant from one of our site visitors today to make me realize that.
The Ravens are 12-4 and the second seed in the postseason dance. For the first time they swept all of their home games; swept the AFC North while winning the division and they are 6-0 against all teams still alive in the NFL. Yet for some reason my intestines are tortured practically every game I watch and expletives will fly from my mouth like saliva from an upset Bill Cowher’s.
And I’m wondering why?
Sure the Ravens could get better. John Harbaugh could help foster a better team killer instinct; Cam Cameron could utilize the skill sets of his offensive squad and work between the hash marks more efficiently; yes Joe Flacco can look clueless and listless at times and he can master the finer nuances of solid quarterback play; Jerry Rosburg’s special teams units leave much to be desired.
The list could go on.
But the bottom line is the “W” and there are 12 of them on the board for the Ravens. It doesn’t matter how they got there – they are there and 20 other teams are not. They are there and they get a week off and they get to play at home. They are there and just 2 wins removed from their second Super Bowl appearance. Only 3 other teams in the NFL can say that.
Think about that and then ask yourself given all of those positives, why is it that the Ravens have been so heavily criticized by their own fans? It’s nuts! And trust me, I’m not blaming anyone. I’ve done it too!
But I’m not doing it any more.
Look back to last season. No one and I mean NO ONE expected the Green Bay Packers to get on a roll and win the Super Bowl as a 10-6 wild card. But they did. This year, look around. Do you see any team without warts?
· Green Bay has the 32nd ranked defense and New England the 31st
· Houston and Pittsburgh are both nicked up and resemble infirmaries
· Denver is 8-8 and riding a 3 game losing streak
· Cincinnati is 0-7 against the playoff teams
· San Francisco has very little playoff experience and a challenged offense
· New Orleans has the 24th ranked defense and they were smoked earlier this season by the 2-14 St. Louis Rams
· The Lions surrendered 45 points to a backup quarterback during Week 17
· The Falcons are like the Wicked Witch to water when they play outdoors
· The New York Giants are ranked 29th against the pass in a conference that features Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees during the playoffs.
So the next time you think about bitching like I have about a team like the Ravens who millions of NFL fans across the country would love to call theirs, think about where they are and where they could be and then chill and be thankful that they are YOUR BALTIMORE RAVENS.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to give myself an overdue and well-deserved ass beating.

You raise a good point. We can't complain as fans, we have a great organization and great players and a solid coach. The other side of it is that I think being critical fans makes the organization better. Also, Baltimore fans are critical because they are one of the most knowledgeable fans, football smart fans...and when something doesn't seem right we say so. That is good because we are honest about our team.

I had a hard time digesting some of the comments pre-game about the Ravens chances against the Bengals. This team is inconsistent people would moan. 11-4 (now 12-4) is inconsistent? But what boggled my mind even more was the post-game drivel. Fans actually complained. Complained about a sweep of the division and a #2 seed. You name it and people were "concerned" or "worried" about some aspect of this team.
I get the passion that people have and I've flown off the handle a few times in my comments too but not after what this team has accomplished. There are times to bitch, cry, and/or whine but there are also times to smile, laugh, and just enjoy where you team is right now.
There's plenty of time to sweat it out in a few weeks on Sunday.

crap!
as i am proud of the accomplishments of our ravens for their successes this season (league wide, we have been in the top 5 all year in power rankings-could be the talent on the field), i am NOT going to sit back and watch our superior talent routinely being mismanaged/poorly coached and not say anything about it. isn't this the place where receivers come to die? did anyone notice sunday that ray rice made that game saving run at the end of the 4th qtr, he saved the game!!!!!, and was still in there after killing himself, for the REST of the carries. how about 1. bringing in the other troups-ricky-fresh legs 2. he's our the best weapon and we STILL need to finish this superbowl thing. how about targeting ONLY pitta in crucial situations and TOTALLY ignoring the rest of the guys. how about a few play action passes on 1st down-you set it up with the same running play each set of downs-we were all waiting. i think the worst news i heard today was "norv turner and staff will be returning for next season". another season of cam's junk? can he/will he screw flacco up more? remember the last time we actually saw a real offense in balto-vinnie could light it up back in '96.
i think i've been watching really good football teams for too long to let this version of the ravens go by without questioning why we can't get good field position on a kickoffs, forget touchdowns. how many points have been the responsibility of the kickoff/punt teams? where's jermain, bennie? i thought we had a special teams guy on our sideline.
i could go on and on, but i think we are ALL getting tired of seeing the same things, over and over, and WANT it to all work out as it keeps eating on all of us. ozzie keeps stocking us, so maybe we'll just luck our way in. i hope so to. in my opinion, harbaugh has brought more accountability then rex ever would have, but it's certainly going to take ray and his leadership to win this thing.
winning the division-wonderful, getting the bye-absolutely necessary.
take the week off and go get them ray, you old man!

This was a topic at the water cooler in the office today. We are a spoiled fan base due to four consecutive years of success. I thought last year's hysteria was worse than this year when they went 11-5. This year the team may be spared b/c of the home berth and first round bye. Hopefully after three years of road playoffs enough fans understand a home playoff game is a treat. And like Corey Redding said, come to Baltimore... M&T is going to be a frenzied nut house of purple and black. Go Ravens!

I'll respectfully disagree in your diagnoses of problems and the problems of the team and in general the whole philosophy of the huggers "Ws is all that matters" and the haters "we can't win on the road/Flacco looks asleep etc." It's easy to try and push everything that has taken place under the blanket of the 12-4 record. No one team is perfect, but the mark of performance is whether a team plays above or below its talent. That is a hard thing to estimate because one cannot ignore matchup problems against certain teams.
But I think we will all agree that the Ravens had problems against QBs who god rid of the ball quickly and schemes that neutralized our pass rush and presented matchup problems. The most worrisome defeats are at the hands of the Titans and Chargers. And that's because we will likely encounter similar offenses in the playoffs.
The second concern I have is with coach Harbaugh. Cameron has not let us down in the playoffs. His gameplan against the Steelers have kept as competitive. But I worry that the lack of focus and intelligence the Ravens displayed in Pittsburgh about a year back are still with this team. Harbaugh must acknowledge to himself that the Ravens need to play smarter football.
On the other hand the Ravens lines have not gotten enough credit for their performance at the line of scrimmage. While the Defensive line play has somewhat dropped off following Ngata's injury and because opponents' have figured out McPhee and Kruger, I do not believe that there is a team that can match the intensity of our lines. This team is not built around skilled positions, it's built around the intensity of its effort. That is why the Ravens are better off running the ball. It allows our offensive line to be aggressive and Yanda and Grubbs to pull and get to the second level. You can bet that Vonta Leach will be looking for people to collide with.
The Ravens may have fewer problems than other AFC playoff teams, but what matters is whether they can diagnose and correct them.

TL--It's a team sport and what most fans never want to think about is that the other side wants to win too.
Talent in the NFL doesn't vary that much from team to team, unlike college where you might see schools with 75,000 students beat the crap out of schools with 15,000 regularly.
In the pros it's likely one play here or there that turns a game...one missed block, one missed tackle or a blown assignment...even a referee's call.
Many times a 'great' season makes one think that their team is great, when in reality, it was just the year where they got the 1st down when they needed it, or the call, or the turnover...the stars just lined up.
Look at the 2000 Ravens in the playoffs...in the Denver game, a pass to Jamal Lewis goes up in the air and could have easily been intercepted and returned for a TD...instead, it bounces around to Shannon Sharpe who turns into a score...in Tennessee, the Titans placekicker had an awful day which offset the fact the the Titans clearly outplayed the Ravens, yet lost by 2 TD's. What happens in Oakland if Sharpe doesn't split the defense on the 6 yard pass from our own endzone?
Fans never, ever understand just how close all these games really are...coaches and players do.
In the playoffs all that is magnified by the stakes and the rabid fan bases in the NFL.
Get the breaks and you win and become gods for a season; don't get them and your coach, QB, OC, DC, Special Teams all suck.
