I’ve been asked often who I think the odd man out will be for the Ravens when it comes to the No. 3 quarterback position. My answer has been consistent since the acquisition of Marc Bulger was announced.
BOTH!
The Ravens have added quality depth through free agent augmentation of their roster and through the draft. The battle for those final roster spots promises to be fierce and it will end with some quality players being released.
So why give up a roster spot to a No. 3 quarterback who the coaching staff had such little confidence in last year that they wouldn’t sit Joe Flacco even for a game against a bad team despite performance degrading injuries?
They shouldn’t give up that spot and hopefully they won’t.
Look it isn’t as though the Ravens need someone in the three-hole to groom as a future starter. If all goes according to plan, Joe the Quarterback will hold that title for the next decade. So why bother with lesser developmental talents like Troy Smith or John Beck?
If the Ravens have to stoop to the depths of starting a third string QB, isn’t the season in peril anyway? Why let go of a player that can provide depth and contribute on special teams? Maybe THAT player has a greater chance to make an impact at the NFL level than either of the team’s potential No. 3 QB’s.
Couldn’t they find someone as good as Beck or Smith atop the QB scrap heap if that unfortunate time arrives?
Well yeah!
But time is on the Ravens’ side with Smith and Beck.
The Ravens could use their arms in camp. They could place either or both in favorable preseason game situations that could enhance their trade value. Perhaps some other clubs enter the mix due to camp injuries or substandard performances from QB’s currently filling rosters.
For the time being neither seems to have any marketability. After all, Cleveland opted for Seneca Wallace over Troy Smith and they chose to keep their 2010 sixth round pick instead of dealing for the Cleveland native.
Not a good sign.
Now folks seem to think the Eagles will deal for Smith if and when they jettison Michael Vick.
Howard Eskin of WIP reported yesterday that Philadelphia is “eyeballing Troy Smith.”
What or who is Eskin’s source?
Might this be the sly work of an agent?
Is Philly really a match for Smith given Andy Reid’s direct pipeline into the Ravens organization through a conduit named John Harbaugh?
And why does anyone think that Smith is better than the probable castoffs from Oakland or Miami?
Whatever you think Smith’s or Beck’s market value is, by the time the Ravens are asked to submit their final 53 man roster, the value of the spot will be worth more than either Smith or Beck.

Flacco better watch his back. Smith and Beck are expendable, even though I think Smith still has a lot of potential to be a great player. But between the two of them, they have started about 7 games, and won 1 of them. That's not what you want backing up your "Super Bowl" bound team.
But what's more important to note, is that perhaps Flacco is just a bit ruffled by this. See, he never earned his starting spot in the first place. It was between Boller and Smith, Flacco wasn't even on the radar, at all. And then they both miraculously went down with injury/illness at almost the precise same time, paving the way for Flacco to start. He got handed the job, and didn't blow it during the regular season, plain and simple. If the Ravens had started losing games in 2008, Flacco would have been benched, and Smith would have gotten a shot. That's just how it goes.
But the reality is, now, for the first time, Flacco has some real competition. He had nothing to worry about with Smith and Beck being his backups. With Bulger, he's got a former 4000+ yd. season Pro Bowler, whose led a team to the playoffs before, and won playoff games with his arm, something Flacco has yet to do. In fact, considering how sharply Flacco's apparent skills seem to decline as soon as we hit the post season, two years running now, I'd say he does indeed have something to be worried about.
With the money they're paying Bulger, and with so many veterans on this team knowing that this is a WIN NOW type of scenario, all Flacco has to do, is tweak his ankle, or get "turf toe", and suddenly he's got a former Pro Bowler playing behind a GOOD offensive line, with GOOD offensive talent around him. That's dangerous. Bulger could do some real damage with our offense. And while Flacco has looked good (at times) in the regular season, he has been succinctly abysmal in the playoffs, where it actually matters. And he has yet to put up big numbers against ANY team with a good defense.
I'm hoping, as much as anybody, that Flacco actually improves, and that our offense continues to get better, because I want the team to win. I want the Ravens to win another Super Bowl, like they SHOULD have done in 2006, and 2008. But as of right now, I'd be far more willing to trust Bulger in the playoffs, than Flacco, who has thus far only choked in January, when it actually comes down to his arm having to win the game. It happened against the Steelers, and it happened again against the Colts.
Flacco, Bulger, Smith, who cares. I just want this team to finally win another trophy. We've been good enough to do so far years (when healthy), but we keep getting let down by terrible postseason QB play.
