I’m still quite surprised that I harbor no resentment, no negative feelings towards the Colts after their Super Bowl XLI victory. Only days ago I could never have predicted this nothingness. Part of me is pleased about. Part of me is soul searching, wondering if I’ve softened or if time has eased the pain of the Colts abandoning us – all of us.
Let’s face, it’s a tired subject and I don’t plan on belaboring this beaten to death topic any more.
Tonight, I watched highlights of the celebration in Indianapolis as the players paraded briskly through the frigid streets of Circle City. I remembered how I felt when the Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV. What a great feeling that was, the culmination of an unlikely whirlwind tour.
I wonder what if feels like to be a fan from Indianapolis. I wonder what they think of when they hear that this is the Colts first World Championship since 1971. That must feel forced to them. It must feel uncomfortable. The Colts weren’t even a wild dream for them in 1971.
Do they even want that association?
Would you?
If the Ravens had kept the name of the Browns and the Browns had won in ’71, would that championship feel like yours? Would the Baltimore Browns “second” title feel genuine? Might it even cheapen the first true title?
It would for me.
And this brings me to my point.
You see my bet is now that Indianapolis has earned their first Super Bowl Title, they really don’t want the ties to the one that belongs to Baltimore. And I have a hunch that the Circle City natives would have no problem disassociating themselves from the Lombardi Trophy won in Super Bowl V by the Baltimore Colts. Furthermore, I don’t think they would care if a clear line of demarcation was drawn to separate the accomplishments of the pre and post 1984 Colts.
For those of you who think the Colts Super Bowl win on Sunday was like rubbing salt in an old wound, think again. It just might be a healing ointment.
While the sporting world savors the apparent sweet nectar of Peyton’s Place, now might be the best time to take that first step towards restoring Baltimore’s football heritage.
We at 24x7 are about to take that step.
We hope you’ll join us.
Stay tuned....
