Lombardi's Way - Flacco's struggles against quality opponents continue

Flacco's struggles against quality opponents continue

"It's just one game," said Ravens outside linebacker Jarret Johnson after the Ravens lost to the Bengals 15-10 on Sunday.

"It won't make us or break us."

True for the team but is that true for Joe Flacco?

Could the depths of his ineptness against Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer’s Cover 2 break the quarterback formerly known as Joe Cool? And while we’re on the topic of “cool” does that description really fit Flacco?

Really?

You know generally speaking it wouldn’t be fair to beat up on Joe the Quarterback after just two games and one loss. After all, didn’t most of us when considering the Ravens schedule conclude that the team needed to at least split the first two games of the season in order to set up the balance of the campaign properly?

But this isn’t about one game with Flacco. This is a body of work that suggests the third year signal caller can’t get it done against playoff caliber teams.

Since the 2008 post season Flacco has been in 14 games against playoff teams including the two 2010 contests. His record is 5-9. During those games Flacco has thrown only 10 touchdown passes while connecting with the wrong color jerseys 21 times. He’s hit on a little less than 55% of his passes in those contests on 447 attempts while averaging just 191 yards passing.

Add it all up and Flacco’s QB Rating is a paltry 60.4 against high level competitors.

Many blamed the lack of weapons in the passing game for Flacco’s past failures and they concluded that if Ozzie could only surround the former Delaware Blue Hen with quality weapons, the numbers would climb and so would his success against the better teams in the league.

Usher in former Pro Bowlers Anquan Boldin and TJ Houshmandzadeh; draft polished receiving TE prospects Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta to go along with former Pro Bowlers Ray Rice, Willis McGahee, Le’Ron McClain, Todd Heap and Derrick Mason.

Mission accomplished Ozzie.

Yet the results aren’t any better.

In fact they are worse.

Flacco’s QB rating through two games in 2010 is an anemic 41.2. And other than blind faith there’s little evidence that suggests things will get better.

Sure, Flacco should get some medicine this weekend for his ills and the prescription reads: “The Cleveland Browns”. But will playing the Browns morph into a long term remedy for Joe? Can anyone realistically conclude today that he has a chance to beat the rugged Steelers in Pittsburgh on October 4?

Flacco’s mechanics are in disarray. He’s throwing off his back foot. His drops seem out of synch and consequently his timing with his receivers is off. He no longer seems to be throwing to a spot on the field. He waits until receivers break open and then throws.

By the time the ball arrives it’s often too late.

Or worse!

What happened to looking off the safeties the way Flacco did during the preseason?

Where are those effective pump fakes?

Jim Zorn said priority No. 1 for him as the club’s new QB coach would be to help Flacco develop suddenness and explosiveness in the pocket. Who detonated that plan?

Let’s face it – Joe Flacco is a mess.

On Sunday against the Bengals both Boldin and Mason seemed a bit perturbed about Flacco’s inability to deliver the ball. Instead of huddling on the sidelines Flacco’s confusion and stoic look was matched only by Zorn’s apparent confusion and equally stoic look.

Why not get together with Boldin and Mason and talk it over – discuss what they can do together to make it work? Wouldn’t that make sense? Wouldn’t that show leadership?

Instead Boldin and Mason brood while Flacco takes another trip to the land of the dazed and confused.

Ever see Peyton Manning on the sidelines after a series gone awry. He’s pouring over snapshots of formations, talking to his receivers, coaches and offensive line to work together to fix the issues.

We don’t see any pre-snap adjustments from Flacco in the form of audibles.

We don’t see any irregular cadences designed to disrupt the defense’s timing.

What we do see is Flacco locking in on receivers which draws defenders and prevents him from seeing the entire field as evidenced by a WIDE open Mason running all alone down the right side line (see video).

Flacco fell flat on his face for the third consecutive time against the Bengals. That’s a disturbing pattern that suggests little development.

Is he above being yanked for the balance of the game?

Isn’t the team more important? Isn’t the win?

Why worry about the psyche of the quarterback? Wouldn’t a good quarterback use the yanking as fuel to prove the world wrong and respond to the adversity? Isn’t that the kind of leader you want for your football team?

There are no more excuses for Flacco. Ozzie has provided all the toys. He’s carefully augmented the roster to give Flacco enviable weaponry via trades, the draft and free agent acquisitions.

Flacco has to start delivering and not just against JV teams like the Cleveland Browns. He needs to do it against the Steelers in Pittsburgh. If not there’s another free agent acquisition that Ozzie Newsome signed who just might be able to help.

His name is Marc Bulger who could prove to be the best free agent QB acquisition since Arizona hired Kurt Warner to “back-up” Matt Leinart.

Sure, one game as Jarret Johnson said won’t make or break the Ravens.

But how many more performances against good teams like the one Flacco turned in on Sunday can the Ravens absorb before they really are broken?

Let’s hope we never find out.

I can't believe this article. It's not that Flacco hasn't struggled against the better teams; it's the fact that some fans expect him to waltz in to the AFC North, the division with the toughest defense in the league, and possibly the toughest overall division in the league, and dominate the Steelers and Bengals. Never mind that he DID have good games against the Chargers and the Vikings (who had a very good defense last season). Never mind any of the good things he's done, let's just focus on the bad. Name an "elite" QB that hasn't had a 3-4 interception game, just totally blown it. There are none!

How many QBs have taken strides, right in the year 3 - year 5 period? What gives people like you the right to decide that Flacco just doesn't have "it." People thought that about Brees. They thought it about Warner. They've called Manning a choker for years. The only QB who hasn't had to deal with this crap in recent years is Brady, because they won right away.

And I agree with Mikerobe, you failed to mention the HUGE Cam Cameron factor in that game. It's a new offense, and you're one of the naive fans who thinks that just because we added good players, they should immediately produce. That's not how it works, ask any former player. I was shocked to read this terrible, negative article. Do us all a favor and stop writing.

We need to stop bashing Flacco! Peyton manning the guy we seem to be guaging him on has had multiple games with 4 picks! How about the fact that Peyton with all his numbers couldn't get to the Superbowl until 2007 and he came into the league in 1998. His big game numbers historically are horrible and if it weren't for the fact he had the lucky break to get the Bears in the SuperBowl he still may not have one. Lets shut up and watch this kid develop and stop treating him like he is a bad quaterback because he is the best we have had as far as all out skills.

I get that Flacco is struggling but I wonder what in the last 5 years suddenly makes Bulger the go-to guy against "quality" opponents. Granted, he didn't have much to work with in St. Louis but to me, this is just an example of schizophrenic fan mentality. Sure there is the possibility that Bulger comes in and plays well but when weighing the odds, is it actually beneficial to the team? Throw another guy in there and then say he crashes and burns. Then how long do you let him stay in? How long before you realize it was a terrible idea and go back to your other quarterback who now hasn't had playing time to work through his struggles? Now you've just wasted a few games that legitimately could destroy your season. Based on the evidence of the last few years, if I'm playing the odds on chances of winning consistently this year....give me Flacco.

Tony,
Very strong argument made and no it doesn't look flattering to Joe. Wasn't Brees chased out of SD, passed over in Miami for Culpepper? Eli Manning struggled awhile in NY. How many playoff games has Palmer and Rivers won, combined? Didn't Big Ben have mediocre ratings in his two SB appearances? All just questions to ponder.

The Ravens O was bad. Play calling questionable. Even an amateur (me) noticed that routes were bunched, all to the outside. Defenders could corral players easier keeping players in front. Middle of the field rarely explored. WR didn't get great separation. O-line was porous. The D played awesome but dropped two potential turnovers, perhaps 1 pick six. There weren't any momentum changers that favored the Ravens. It was a bad game. Ps - Brett threw 4 int Sunday, Tennessee had 7 turnovers.

Funny, I didn't hear any complaints about the piss poor play calling, and route design of Cam Cameron. Did anyone notice that on the Ravens final offensive play they split out 4 wides, but not one of the crossed into the middle of the field? The TV camera shot was directly behind Flacco and you could see that there was no one in between the hash marks for 20 yards. Why is Heap not making a slant at 8-9 yards (enough for the first down) as he could have gained another 10 before contact was made. Cameron cannot put together passing routes that compliment one another, as he has shown since he was with the Chargers. Why do you think Drew Brees had such a breakout season after leaving Cameron's offense? The man should have continued to pound Ray Rice in the second half but failed to do so. Why? Rice was starting to break out and Cameron just put it on the shelf. Whe you have 3-4 wides all runnig routes that don't compliment each other it mnakes the quarterbacks job very tough. While I agree that Joe's mechanics could stand some improvement what really matters is the situations that Cameron puts him in with his inability to design good plays. The man is totally over rated.

Tony is --100% right-- on all accounts. If I had the call, I would have yanked Joe at half time. When you have a -quality- backup QB, as we do, use him! Why pay Bulger 4 million dollars per year to -not run- our struggling offense? Zorn or whoever needs to fix Joe, needs to fix Joe now or we're a .500 team at best. Our list of WRs and TEs is -sick- and our 1st QB can't get them the ball?!?! It will very soon (2 weeks tops) be time to find out if the 2nd QB can.

I'm so glad someone finally wrote this article. I'm sick of everyone throwing "3 playoff road wins" "two trips to the postseason" at me every time I suggest that Flacco is not the second coming coming of Peyton Manning.

Bottom line is Flacco has consistently proven he cannot deliver in the clutch and has personally cost us a number of games with boneheaded decisions (pick to Brackett v Indy last year as an example) and at this stage of the season he is not even comparable to Manning, Brady, Rivers, Rodgers and Big Ben iro ability to lead a team to wins.

with the exception of last years Chargers game, and even this is arguable, every big game victory we have had for since Harbs and Flacco came to town has been on the back of our RBs or Defense - somebody name me a big game that Flcco has stepped up and won for us!

Pulling a slumping QB for the balance of one game for the benefit of the team doesn't mean that they've abandoned the program. It just means they place team goals first IMO.

well then .... let's just trade Flacco for Brees!
Flacco's performance to date stacks up with Brady and Brees for the same timeframes. Flacco is the QB ... u have to stick with the program and give it time.
