Inside The Ravens With Aaron Wilson - Kindle's college coach shares theory on former Longhorn's fall

Narcolepsy could be the culprit

Mack Brown: Sergio Kindle has narcolepsy

By Aaron Wilson

WESTMINSTER -- University of Texas coach Mack Brown has a theory about what happened to Baltimore Ravens rookie linebacker Sergio Kindle.

During the Big 12 media day today, per OrangeBloods.com, Brown told reporters that Kindle might have fallen down two flights of stairs due to narcolepsy.

The former Longhorns star is in the hospital with a fractured skull and has been ruled out of training camp.

There were reports prior to the NFL draft, where Kindle was picked in the second round, that the Dallas native suffers from narcolepsy, attention deficit disorder and that he fell asleep during team meetings.

The Ravens, specifically general manager Ozzie Newsome and director of college scouting Eric DeCosta, seemed amused when asked about the reports that Kindle takes medication for narcolepsy and ADD. Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder involving sleeping issues.

"If it was a concern, we probably wouldn't have drafted him," DeCosta said.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh has said that Kindle fell after waking up in the middle of the night at a house in Austin, Texas when he stumbled around in the dark.

Okay Chad let us look at your players the Ravens have drafted. Take round one,i n the last 10 years, that is ten players, three have been a bust. That gives them a 70% success rate. If you think players you named in round two were that sucessful look again. Baxter was hurt early in his career and never recovered with one injury after another.Weaver was just another body filling a position because we had no one else and he never did have any sacks just like Edwards who took three years to get on the field and also had injuries. So round two only produced one player(Rice) in ten years that is that productive in the NFL. Defensive tackles/ends usually hang around for years. Sharper is average at best.A feww good games.Webb,Zibi and Yanda have had injuries and still have to prove durability and be productive for years to come and stay on this team not sign elsewhere after they start here for a few years( before their rookie contract expires). Rabach,Pashios,Stokely,Mugelli did not start for years here just like Jason Brown and were never re-signed as they should have been. If all would have started or been re-signed they could be counted as great picks I agree. You must rate drafts on players who are successful that start for your team more than 3 years. Many drafted players can last on special teams but successful drafting teams like Colts,Steelers and Giants keep and start their drafted players. Out of all the players you named only Johnson was re-signed after rookie contract. Many of these quality players are still playing and would make the Ravens a playoff team each year. Until Harbaugh took over this team because of losing so many players to free agengy the Ravens had not been in the playoffs two years in the row since 2002.Yes Chad we have produced good drafted players for other teams but that is not how the draft is suppose to work if you want the credited of good drafting for your team! If you rate drafted players and the Ravens drafts only on how successful players perform in the NFL then yes the Ravens are a good darfting teams that is a "Farm sytem" for the entire NFL!

Thats being way to critical of the organization's drafting. I know everyone likes to make Kindle's texting incident a "red flag," but think about it he was texting while driving. How many of us do that and have people label us with "character issues"?

Ozzie's given us great picks from all different rounds
1st- Every single one was solid but T. Taylor, Boller, and Clayton (thats 13/16).
2nd- Jamie Sharper, Gary Baxter, Ray Rice, Anthony Weaver, Dwan Edwards
3rd- LaDarius Webb, Zibi, Yanda, Rabach.
4th-Ovie Mughelli, Jarret Johnson, Stokely, Mulitalo, Hartwell, Zastudil, J. Brown, McClain
5th- Gaither (Supplemental Draft), Jermaine Lewis, Jeff Mitchell, Aubrayo Franklin, Pashos, Terry Jones, Troy Smith.
6th- Adalius Thomas, Chester Taylor, Chad Williams, Cornell Brown, Joe Maese, Gerome Sapp, Sam Koch, Nakamura.
7th-

They clearly do their best work in the 1st round as well as 6th rd for some reason. The praise the get for their drafts on the whole is deserved. This is also without taking into account our undrafted pickups (Priest Holmes, Mike Flynn, Orlando Brown, Will Demps, Bart Scott, Dannell Ellerbe) or their 4th rd picks traded for Steve McNair and Fabian Washington.

They cant hit on them all. If they're hitting on the picks that require the most money (1st round) and doing well overall, you really can't complain

I am glad Decosta is amused that this kid's college coach pointed out another red flag about this players' medical past. As Eric pointed outed out "If we were concerned we would not have drafted him". The question then becomes why with all his red flags (knee injury,DWI,running a car intoa building why texting) did you draft him when everyone else kept passing on him? He made have been higest rated on the Ravens board in round two but Decosta must really think it is funny that he dropped from all teams boards out of round one when early April scouts had him in the top 15 players in the draft. Do you think his medical history may have finally been found out and all teams passed on him just like they had on Dan Cody (remember him Eric)? It is a shame that the media convinces the fans that the Ravens draft the best players available each year, ALL THE TIME.Even 3 years down the line or when players are drafted the media always give the Ravens great reviews for their drafts (all players). Eric always gives all draft picks praise two years after they have failed but still remain on the team. Yes the Ravens have made many good first round (mostly) draft picks(Lewis,Reed,Heap.Flacco maybe). Decosta also makes many bad choices in later rounds that are never talked about after the draft and after these players are released (Pittman,Figurs,Cody, amd the best of all Boller and many others). I guess Arron wilson should not have reported that Decosta was amused or Decosta maybe should have used his same boring PR line that all players drafted are good players!
Howver, most importantly it should be pointed out that the good news may be that Kindle was not doing bad things at that house like drugs and alcohol. He made be a good kid that just has had lots of bad luck but....maybe just maybe he was not the right draft pick at that point in the draft(check back in 3 years on him and Dan williams DT of U.I love my Ravens and they have an excellant chance to be in the Super Bowl. Overall the mangement team does an excellant job lead by Ozzie but the media should tell the whole story and allow the fans to judge the team with all the facts!
