The AFC North: Week 6
ITH QUOTES OF THE WEEK: "When you give Tom Brady field position, he's going to hurt you. Sometimes when you give him bad field position he's still going to hurt you." ~ Browns coach Romeo Crennel said after his club lost to New England on Sunday.

"Not perfect, a lot of things we've got to do better. Some things that we did will leave us vulnerable if they happen again in terms of what we did and didn't do. I hope our fans can appreciate how hard it is to win in this league. People will extrapolate what they want out of it, but I'm thrilled to have that win."

Week #5 – AFC North Scores

Baltimore  9  San Francisco   7

New England 34  Cleveland   17

Pittsburgh 21  Seattle   0

Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore’s defense suffocated San Francisco on all but a few plays, and Matt Stover covered for Baltimore's offensive red zone ineptitude with three field goals in the Ravens narrow victory. Steve McNair was 29-of-43 for 214 yards and no turnovers. Derrick Mason had 11 quiet catches for 85 yards, while Willis McGahee rushed for 88 yards behind a patchwork offensive line and caught seven passes for 48 more. For much of the game, the offensive line included 3 rookies as OT Adam Terry and C Mike Flynn went down with injuries. Coach Brian Billick described his offense's effort as "survival. Not perfect by any stretch, but ... given the guys we had to throw in there, we grew a little bit today."

Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals had a bye in week #5.

Cleveland Browns

The Browns had shown promise after years of mediocrity. But they lost running back Jamal Lewis for the game with an injured right foot after he rushed for 11 yards on their first play. The passing attack couldn't pick up the slack as Derek Anderson threw 3 INTs in the first half, 2 on consecutive offensive plays by Cleveland; that led to 14 points. Jason Wright gained 59 yards in 15 carries in place of Lewis. Anderson finished the game completing 22 of 43 passes with 2 TDs. Twice in the fourth quarter, the Browns cut the deficit to 10 points. And twice the Patriots came right back with a TD of their own. On the last TD, CB Randall Gay stripped Kellen Winslow of a reception and returned the fumble 15 yards for a touchdown with 42 seconds left.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers' top defensive players stood on the sidelines for most of the 2nd half. Led by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's improvising and creativity, this might have been one of the few times where a shutout could be credited as much to the offense as the defense. Roethlisberger directed three successive lengthy TD drives highlighted by Najeh Davenport's runs and a series of catches by Cedrick Wilson and Nate Washington. Of the Steelers' 18 receptions, only 4 were by a starter -- all by TE Heath Miller. The combination of RB duo Willie Parker and Najeh Davenport finished with 160 yards on 35 carries as the Steelers held the ball for 41 minutes versus 19 for the Seahawks who were shut out for the 1st time since the 2000 season.

Week #6 Predictions

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a bye in week #6.

Baltimore gained 315 yards on 76 offensive plays (4.1 yards per play) in Week 5. Its longest offensive play went for 18 yards. WR Derrick Mason is on pace for about 141 catches. Mason has caught 44 passes for 372 yards and 1 TD this season (8.5 yards per catch). The Ravens have won the time of possession battle in every game this season.
