AFC North mailbag
Posted On: 11/19/11
If you have a question about the AFC North, send it to my mailbag. It's Saturday morning, so let's open up some mail ...
Hugh from Denver writes: What's the tie breaker in the AFC North if Cincinnati sweeps Baltimore, Baltimore sweeps Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh sweeps Cincinnati?
Jamison Hensley, from AFC North headquarters, responds: That's a lot of 'ifs' Hugh. But if this scenario plays out and all three teams finish with the same record, the first tiebreaker is division record.
Ed Reed nearing career-worst drought
Posted On: 11/18/11
Ed Reed led the NFL in interceptions last season by picking off eight passes in the final 10 games. That hot streak didn't extend into 2011.
Reed is currently dealing with one of the worst interception droughts of his 10-year career. He has gone eight games without a pick, which is one game shy of his career-worst mark of nine straight without an interception that occurred in 2005.
Reed, who has 56 interceptions in 137 career games (which is one in almost every 2.

Clayton picks Ravens to be AFC's top seed
Posted On: 11/16/11
In ESPN.com's Hot Button, John Clayton picks the Baltimore Ravens to be the AFC's top seed while Ashley Fox is going with the New England Patriots.
Clayton believes 12 wins will secure the No. 1 spot for Baltimore. "With no conviction, I'm going to go with the Ravens only because they have a tiebreaker edge over the Steelers," Clayton wrote. "I'd go with the Patriots, but they would lose the tiebreaker to the Steelers because of their Week 8 loss to them at Heinz Field.
Who's hot and not in red-zone passing
Posted On: 11/16/11
When it comes to throwing in the red zone, the windows to hit wide receivers is smaller and the decision-making is quicker. The general rule is more experienced quarterbacks have greater success inside the 20-yard line than younger ones.
That's not the case in the AFC North, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Bengals rookie quarterback Andy Dalton has thrived the most in the red zone while the division's most experienced quarterback, the Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger, has struggled the most there.
Ravens lack championship focus

The Ravens are the best team in the AFC. No, wait, they're the worst team in the AFC.
Both statements are true depending on what game, quarter and series you're watching, which reveals how baffling and frustrating this season of mystery has been for Baltimore.
The Ravens can turn a two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback into a turnover machine one week, but can't stop Matt Hasselbeck the next . They can drive 92 yards for the winning touchdown in the final seconds at Pittsburgh, but can't record a first down for the first 40 minutes at Jacksonville.
Bengals won't win without A.J. Green
Posted On: 11/16/11
Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green told The Cincinnati Enquirer today that he will be a game-time decision for Sunday's game at Baltimore, which is a serious concern if his assessment is accurate.
Without Green, the Bengals won't beat the Ravens. He is the top offensive playmaker on the team and perhaps on the field Sunday (that is, if the Ravens remember Ray Rice is playing).
When the rookie first-round draft pick was on the sideline Sunday, neither Jerome Simpson nor Andre Caldwell stepped up, which is why Andy Dalton struggled to throw the ball deep.
Ray Rice is obviously frustrated by role
Posted On: 11/16/11
Three days after declining to talk to reporters -- a first in his four-year career -- Ravens running back Ray Rice said all the right things. Rice said his frustration comes from losing and not the reduced carries.
"It was more a frustration on how we lost the game," Rice told Baltimore reporters today. "My reason for declining comment was just not to come out and say something after an emotional loss. We already know what that leads to. It leads to trouble.
Wake-up: Suggs says Ravens won't lose six

Outspoken linebacker Terrell Suggs said the stunning loss at Seattle won't derail the Ravens from reaching the playoffs for a fourth straight year.
In fact, Suggs insisted that the Ravens won't lose six games this season. Sitting at 6-3, Baltimore would have to go 5-2 the rest of the way to avoid a six-loss season.
“[W]ithout struggle, there’s no progress,” Suggs told The Baltimore Sun after the loss in Seattle.
Wake-up call: Steelers back in first place

Every morning, grab a cup of coffee and get your AFC North wake-up call here:
Just like before you board any roller coaster, the AFC North race should come with an advisory: Please be aware of sudden drops, quick climbs and unexpected jarring turns.
How else can you describe the Pittsburgh Steelers going from 0-2 in the AFC North to the division leader in a span of a week. Or how the Ravens can go from being the top team in the AFC to one that would barely make the playoffs if the season ended today.
