Fran The Fan - Changes are Coming

News and Notes from a Fan’s Perspective
Written By:
Changes are Coming
I waited a few days to write this column, following what was for all Ravens fans one of the bitterest losses ever suffered by a Baltimore sport team.  It helped that I had to leave for Atlanta on business early Monday morning, sparing me what I was told later was several days of excruciating Baltimore radio sports talk.  It’s all a matter of perspective; my colleagues in the Southland, Falcons fans all, said to me “Your team went to the Conference Championship game and you’re complaining?”

Well, let me get my licks in here and be done with it.  I don’t want to disparage what was a great, great year.  It was exciting, we won every game that we played at home, we had a 1st round bye, we beat 7 teams that made the playoffs.  But….

We were there….we were there!!!  IF Lee Evans tucks that ball away; IF Billy Cundiff makes a kick he’s made hundreds of times; IF John Harbaugh calls a time out with 15 seconds left, not to ice his own kicker, but to give Cundiff and placeholder Sam Koch 30 precious seconds to make sure their spot and sight lines were square.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda!

A good friend of mine, a former Ravens PSL owner who now lives in Indiana, wrote me earlier this week to offer his condolences and he paraphrased the former Kentucky and Maryland coach Jerry Claiborne, saying ”It don't do any good to play the if'n game.”

That’s excellent advice for all of us.

I’ll take it when the hurting stops.

Let me get this out of my system:  I can’t hang Billy Cundiff in effigy.  I can’t put Lee Evans on the shot list for the waiver wire.  If I were to hold anyone or any unit to blame, it would be the Ravens, collectively as a team, for incurring all four of their losses against teams with losing records.  The 12-7 loss on National TV to a horrid Jacksonville team is particularly galling.  That’s what should stick in our collective craws.  Why?  A win in any of those games would have assured the Ravens of home field advantage throughout the playoffs and hosting the AFC Championship game at the Purple Vault.

Is there any doubt the Ravens would have been victorious over the Patriots if the game was played at The Bank?

In addition to dealing with a bitter loss, Ravens fans will now watch the team go through one of the most volatile off seasons since the salary cap purge following the 2001 season.  Our defensive coordinator, Chuck Pagano has left for Indianapolis.  Ed Reed and Matt Birk are on the cusp of retirement.  A bunch of unrestricted free agents (UFAs) and restricted free agents (RFAs) will be on the market, including starters Jarret Johnson, Jameel McClain, Ben Grubbs, Lardarius Webb, and Ray Rice, as well as a host of special teamers led by Tom Zbikowski and Haruki Nakamura.

To be honest, all this was coming no matter how the season ended, but somehow it would have been more palatable if I was writing about it on February 6 instead of today.

To make matters worse, now that the Ravens have lost the one coordinator worth keeping, we learned on Friday that they’re keeping the one coordinator who should be walking the plank.  Cam Cameron will be back.  Terrific!  The news just ruined my weekend.  Mr. Unimaginative Offense will return for 2012 and maybe longer, depending on how his new contract is structured.  I’ve heard and read all the reasons for keeping him, but my reasons for dumping him are forthwith:  Jacksonville, 7 points; Tennessee 13 points, Seattle 17 points, San Diego, 14 points.  Uninspired play falling.  Vanilla, easy-to-defense pass routes.  Predictable series.   And that’s the losses!  I won’t mention the times the offense stank when we won the game!

John Harbaugh said it was a “no brainer” to bring Cameron back.  Really?  Maybe it was a slam dunk to promote Dean Pees to replace Pagano, but he gave no thought to replacing Cameron?  Why?  Because he didn’t want to replace both coordinators?  Because he likes the job Cameron has done?   Because Norv Turner was not available?  Because he couldn’t find anybody better?

Maybe so.  I wonder how much of a no brainer it will be when the offense underperforms again in 2012.  Somebody else’s brains might be on the chopping block by then and it won’t only be the offensive coordinator.

Would it be too much to ask for a quarterbacks coach next year?

Enough already.  On to 2012.

With a bunch of UFAs and RFAs, who stays and who goes?  The Ravens can’t re-sign everybody and, based on performance (or lack thereof), they shouldn’t.  My 24x7 colleague Brian McFarland’s excellent analysis of the Ravens salary cap status shows why roster changes will be necessary from a financial perspective, one that will affect the bottom lines of both the organization and season ticket holders alike.  That’s right, I think ticket price increases are a comin’ and it won’t be pretty.

But from a fan’s perspective, all that is a discussion for another day and another column.

as i read articles on this years and next years ravens season, i can't help but notice the difference in attitude between ravens 24/7 columns and articles and the sun papers writers take. it seems to me that this issue regarding harbaugh and his 2012 "staff?" is 180 degrees to the fan base sentiment. the majority of the radio guys are in the same boat, and very supportive, not luke warm, but behind the under achieving as if this is some political thing.

D. Mason would have hung on to that ball!

Unfortunately, this was a typical Ravens vs. New England game (which are not unlike Steelers-Ravens games with Ben until this season) - the defense kept the opposing offense within range, but the offense missed enough chances to not score enough points (and I'm not talking about just the last two on Sunday - there were others, including open receivers not seen, bad play calls, drops, and field goals not attempted because kicker not reliable.) That's why Ravens are 1-7 against Patriots.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. I think it was a great year too, and can't wait until the OTAs start and the 2012 draft kicks off. I think the roster changes will be very interesting. I am actually over it, Elena, but there were some things I had to get off my chest...but even Cameron didn't think he'd be back.

Since 2001 the real story of the Ravens has been "opportunities lost." No other season can possibly embody this better than the recent 2011 season. The stars all aligned perfectly with an easy schedule and weakened opponent rosters to give Baltimore a Super Bowl appearance and most likely the franchises second SB trophy. But, they blew it, again...in typical Ravens fashion when the game is on the line. When will the stars ever align so perfectly for the Ravens? Don't think it's gonna happen again anytime soon. Looming in 2012 is the NFC East, a rejuvenation Steelers and Bengals teams, and a new Ravens roster with lots of holes to fill. Starks said it best the other day, until the Ravens learn how to win and FINISH they will most likely always be the Bride's Maid and never the bride.

That had to be the most depressing article I've read.. We all know now that Cam stays and Pagano left.. But can we PLEASE move on.. It's just been too depressing a week..This town needs a "LIFE" injection..Our heads have been dropped for too long now.(I think Ray Lewis would agree!) Do not continue to bring us down! Ravens have always done a fantastic job of bringing in talent.. I expect that to continue..Ok, so with Cam back games will be heavily relied upon our D getting it done. (nothing new)What can we do as fans to say we've had enough of Cam so that we are heard? Protest? Get ourselves on the news station? Not attend games and send a message?? Whats the answer? It's frusterating.. This entire town gets it TRUST ME. But please.. either give us an answer or move on in your articles. It's a LOOONNGG time till next season and this loyal Bmore chick is still proudly rocking her purple jerseys in the off season!
