Offensive Line under pressure from Jets and Cardinals
On the subject of which Ravens’ offensive linemen have blocked well thus far, I looked at all the pressure plays in the Jets and Cards games.
Against the Jets, we surrendered no QB sacks, and just 1 hurry (per Gamebook, NFL.com):
Q2 0:38
Sypniewski was beaten straight up on a speed rush by Hobson (54), who lined up on the offensive left side. Hobson hit Boller just as he threw, causing the incompletion.
Against the Cards, there were 4 sacks surrendered, and just 1 other hurry (I'm not sure if these are recorded consistently...perhaps 90% of the time a sack is recorded as a hurry in the gamebook):
Q2 4:29
McNair tripped over center. Yanda blocked his man to the ground after pushing him across the pocket. Grubbs held his block well. Delayed pressure from Dansby (54) was untouched and resulted in the sack.
Q3 8:22
Berry beat Yanda on an outside rush. Chester failed to block his man (Dockett) cleanly as he exploded past him with the first step. Flynn chipped Dockett, slowing him only for a moment. McClain picked up Pace (97), but the 3 pressure points did not leave much of a pocket for McNair. Dockett hit him at the ankles, Berry high with 1 arm, but the ball was actually dislodged by Yanda as he brushed McNair in his attempt to block Berry. Dockett was credited with the FF and Berry got the FR.
Q3 3:48
A very solid play action fake was sniffed out by Watson. The entire line (except Yanda), slid left while McClain also faked the lead block. Yanda, with a chip from Heap, handles his man in open space. McNair faked the handoff to Smith and turned to look for a receiver. Watson then came with pressure that caused McNair to move up in the pocket and flip an intentionally incomplete pass to the nearby Heap.
Q4 7:45 (per Gamebook…the snap actually came sometime after the 7:00 mark if you are reviewing the video)
Watson (98) beat Jason Brown to the inside causing the initial pressure, as Boller stepped up, Dockett and Smith slipped off their blocks to take Boller down at the line of scrimmage. This sack was slow to develop and some might refer to it as a coverage sack.
Q4 6:15
The offensive left side was one blocker short. Terry may have blocked the wrong man as Berry (probably should have been Terry's responsibility) and Dansby flew by to his left. Musa correctly chose the inside rusher Berry, making a futile dive at him, which only served to slow him slightly. Dansby had a free run at Boller which fortunately did not result in a fumble. Everyone from Brown to the right blocked effectively.
