FANTASY BLITZ: News, Notes & a Trip Down Memory Lane

When you view this week’s NFL Schedule, the Rams at the Browns appear to be one of the few games that will have no playoff implications. While that is true, these teams have a rich history of not only sharing the same city but facing each other in three classic title games in the 1950’s

The Cleveland Rams were an expansion team in 1937. They won the NFL title in 1945 led by the passing and place kicking of rookie of the year quarterback Bob Waterfield. They packed up a couple of months after winning the championship and moved to sunny Los Angeles for 1946.

In 1946 a new league was formed, the All America Football Conference, one of its members were the Cleveland Browns, they replaced the Rams as Cleveland’s team. The Browns dominated the new league winning every championship from 1946 to 1949. After 1949, three AAFC members, the Browns, 49ers, and Colts merged with the NFL.

The Browns were placed in the Eastern Division for 1950, which was renamed the American Conference and placed first. The Los Angeles Rams won the National Conference. They would face each other in the 1950 championship game.

The Rams came back to Cleveland for the title game and scored on the first play from scrimmage, on a Waterfield pass to former West Point star Glenn Davis. The exciting game went back and forth, with 28 seconds remaining Hall of Famer Lou Groza kicked the winning field goal for the Browns, they won their first NFL championship 30-28.

Each team repeated in 1951 as conference champions and played the rematch for the title in Los Angeles. This was another back and forth game, this time won by the Rams on a 73 yard TD throw in the 4th period from Hall of Famer Norm Van Brocklin to Hall of Fame end Tom Fears, the Rams won the championship 24-17 and brought  the state California their first major pro sports championship

In 1955 the teams repeated as division champions and met in the LA Coliseum for the title game. Playing in his last game, Browns Hall of Fame quarterback Otto Graham threw for 2 scores and ran for two more as the Browns won their third NFL championship with a 38-14 victory.

So, while this week’s match between the Rams and Browns may not be the best game on the schedule this year, 60 years ago these teams were the best in the NFL and were instrumental in building the league into what it is today.

Now on to the modern day matchups for Week 10...

Cardinals, Kevin Kolb will this week’s game against the Eagles, John Skelton will get another start at quarterback

Bears, WR Devin Hester should play Sunday against the Lions despite an injured ankle

Browns, RB Chris Ogbonnaya fumbled his first carry last week and sat out a good part of the game, he starts this week facing a Ram run defense that has allowed 153.6 yards a game on the ground and gives up 5.2 yards a carry

Cowboys, Demarco Murray should have another big game; the Bills allow 120.8 yards a game rushing and have given up 10 TD’s on the ground

Broncos,  RB Willis McGahee has 4 one hundred yard rushing games in his last six starts, he has a great match up against the Chiefs who have given up easy yards to Michael Bush, Ryan Matthews, Curtis Brinkley, and even Reggie Bush the last few weeks

Lions, Veteran RB Maurice Morris will get  most of the touches against the Bears with Jahvid Best out again…the Bears are solid on defense, but allow 136 combined yards a game to RB’s

Houston, RB Arian Foster is a must start every week, this week facing the Buccaneers his back up Ben Tate is also, the Buccaneers have allowed 372 rushing yards the last two weeks, they are not as good as their low ranking of 25th against the run, Albert Haynesworth is not going to slow down Houston

Colts, TE Dallas Clark will not play this week because of a leg injury and could be placed on injured reserve…Jacob Tamme will get the start at TE Sunday

Jaguars, in ten career against the Colts RB Maurice Jones-Drew has 4 one hundred yard games and 7 touchdowns, this is the worst Colt defense he has ever faced, they allow 146 yards a game on the ground and have given up 11 rushing touchdowns

Chiefs, if you need a quarterback this week, take Matt Cassel, the Broncos have allowed the most fantasy points to quarterbacks, he should have a multiple touchdown pass game

Saints, QB Drew Brees has thrown for a touchdown in 35 consecutive regular season games….Brett Favre threw one in thirty six straight games from 2002 to 2004… Johnny Unitas holds the record of 47, from 1956 to 1960, accomplished in an era when the passing rules favored the defense

Giants, Although Jake Ballard faces a sold 49’er defense, they have been soft against the TE, allowing 77 receptions, my bet is Ballard scores a touchdown and has double digit fantasy points

Steelers, WR Emmanuel Sanders will miss a couple weeks with an ankle injury…Jerricho Cotchery and Antonio Brown will get more targets

Rams, WR Mark Clayton has been activated from the PUP list, he was a main target of Sam Bradford when he was healthy last year

49ers, RB Frank Gore will play despite a sore ankle against the Giants, he has 5 consecutive 100 yard rushing games

Titans, head coach Mike Munchak said Matt Hasselbeck will be their starting QB for the remainder of the season…. RB Chris Johnson should have a big fantasy day against the Panthers 26th ranked run defense Sunday

Redskins RB Roy Helu will be the featured back against the Dolphins Sunday…he averaged 4.1 yards a carry against the top ranked run defense of the 49ers last week
