Camp Notes - CAMP NOTES DAY 9

CAMP NOTES DAY 9 CAMP NOTES DAY 9
The fields adjacent to the McDaniel College gymnasium were saturated from last night’s rains so the Ravens opted to practice on the Bair Stadium field.  Several Navy coaches were on hand today to take in the practice up close and personal.

Kelly Gregg was missing from practice once again and Daniel Wilcox remained sidelined with his left ankle injury.  Brian Billick is hopeful that Wilcox will return to action soon but he appeared a bit concerned due to the unpredictable healing process of ankle injuries. Ed Reed and Samari Rolle returned to practice as did reserve LB Jamar Enzor.  The PUP list players Mike Smith, Dan Cody and Jonathan Ogden all remain out.

Today’s practice was relatively uneventful.  The team began installing its game plan for the Eagles and much of what they did today revolved around that.  There was no “live” hitting today and there likely won’t be much more of that during camp.

While installing some of the running plays Brian Billick set up 9 on 7 drills to work the offensive line assignments.  On one run to off right tackle, Musa Smith was stripped by recent acquisition Ryan Riddle, a third year free agent linebacker out of California.  Billick shouted, “That cannot happen!”

As Billick orchestrated the 9 on 7’s the Ravens top three QB’s, wide receivers and DB’s engaged in some one on one combat.  Kyle Boller threw several nice deep passes with the right amount of trajectory and hit his mark with consistency.  He hit Yamon Figurs and Devard Darling on streaks down the left sideline.  Figurs easily beat Willie Gaston and Darling made a nice stretch to haul in the pass for a score just beyond Evan Oglesby.  Boller also hit Romby Bryant on a streak that was very well covered by David Pittman.  Boller intentionally threw the pass slightly behind Bryant and the receiver adjusted nicely to snare the pass.

Derrick Martin has been a pleasant surprise throughout camp and today he gave a clinic on covering the deep pass.  Martin stayed stride for stride with Damien Linson and then turned to look for the ball, batting it away.  Ronnie Prude was tight with his man but just as he has the entire camp, Prude relies on his hands and not his feet.  He is often engaged in contact beyond 5 yards.  When he backed off Matt Willis at the line of scrimmage, the receiver ran right by Prude. Clearly Prude’s habit of jamming and being physical is to cover his Achilles’ Heal – the absence of top end speed.

Other observations…Skill position players rotated with various line combinations.  Musa Smith and Willis McGahee alternated with the first team offense…The Ravens ran through several screens and the play remains a work in progress for the team.  Kenyonta Marshall blew up a screen to P.J. Daniels a few yards in the backfield, sending the former Yellow Jacket tumbling…Kendrick Ballantyne made a few nice catches today.  He hauled in a Boller pass along the sidelines with one hand and later in the red zone, he made a nice catch in traffic on a pass thrown behind him.

Just as they have all of camp, the defense, particularly Terrell Suggs gave Matt Stover the business when he readied himself for a field goal attempt.  Today’s chant was, “Try not to screw up Stove.”…Rex Ryan lauded the drop back cover skills of the massive Haloti Ngata.  “Nice job Haloti!”…Matt Willis had a tough day, dropping a slant from Kyle Boller during the 2 minute offense and then later in 7 on 7’s, he dropped a perfectly thrown pass from Troy Smith about 15 yards downfield along the left hash…Clarence Moore was sure-handed today, even catching an 8 yard pass on an in route in traffic…Jamaine Winborne continues to play well from the safety spot.  He batted down a pass from Boller to Quinn Sypniewski…Damien Linson beat Samari Rolle on a 40 yard bomb from Smith.  The ball was slightly under thrown and it appeared as though Rolle had it locked in his sights before Linson wrestled it away…Dawan Landry covers the swing pass spot on nearly every time.  Look for him to make a game changing play some time this season on such a pass.  Nearly every time, he’s there at almost the same time as the ball.
