CAMP NOTES DAY 14
Today’s practice was a rather uneventful one that featured a slew of interceptions by the first string defense going up against the scout teams led by both Troy Smith and Drew Olson. Both had very shaky outings.

Ray Lewis picked off an Olson pass in the right flat that had little velocity on it.  Lewis needed little velocity on his easy trot for 6 the other way.  On the very next play, Olson tried his luck deep down the left sideline to Romby Bryant.  The pass was intercepted by Samari Rolle.  A few plays later Olson was again picked off, this time by Chris McAlister who jumped in front of Matt Willis.  Another 6 the wrong way.

Smith had a rough go of it as well as he was intercepted by Prescott Burgess who had TE Marcus Freeman well blanketed yet decided to force it anyway.  Later Smith had a ball tipped at the line of scrimmage by Kenyonta Marshall.  Marshall had the presence of mind to find the ball and intercept it.

Here are a few links to four of those interceptions:

Steve McNair and Kyle Boller were both sharp.  McNair and Demetrius Williams showed today that there is certainly some chemistry brewing between that pitch and catch tandem.  McNair hit Williams between two defenders on a 12 yard in route around the left hash mark.  On the play, Williams fought through coverage to get to his spot while McNair released the ball before Williams break.  Timing like that is nearly indefensible.  The pass came shortly after another timing route thrown to Williams down the left sideline.  Williams beat Derrick Martin on the play for the score.

Later in the practice McNair connected with both Mark Clayton and Todd Heap for scores.  During goal line running plays, McNair showcased some great ball skills during a handoff to Willis McGahee off right tackle.  McNair’s slight of hand helped McGahee to go in for the score mostly untouched as Rick Neuheisel reacted approvingly: “Nice job there No. 9!”

Kyle Boller connected with Mark Clayton for a deep score as Boller split the Cover 2 defenders (Ronnie Prude and Terrell Maze).  Boller again was accurate on intermediate throws.  One throw to Clarence Moore angling to the sidelines bounced off Moore’s hands.

Other notes and observations…Derrick Mason sat out today’s practice with a sore shoulder that may keep him out of Sunday’s game v. the Giants.  If that is the case, look for Devard Darling to get the early reps in 3 receiver sets.  He was the beneficiary of Mason’s down time today indicating that he probably has a slight edge over Moore for the moment.  Neither receiver has really stepped up in a bold way…Chris Chester did not practice but attended in shorts…Antwan Barnes didn’t practice but worked out with a trainer on the side…P.J. Daniels remains out…Kelly Gregg ran with the first team defense during full scrimmaging.  He could play on Sunday yet he may be held out for precautionary reasons…After practice Todd Heap took a few extra reps.  He was seen playing with his daughter and twin toddler sons on field number two…Tomorrow the team breaks camp after their morning walk through scheduled for 9:30.
