Behind The Numbers: Tracking the Ravens offense in 2011: Red Zone Woes Continue

By: Scot Kleinfeld: Game 5 – October 18, 2011

There’s good news and bad news. Since the Ravens are now 4-1 after a solid win over the Texans, let’s start with the good news.

Joe Flacco threw for over 300 yards, found his wide receivers 11 times, and the offense scored 29 points. Although those numbers sound good, there are still some lingering issues.

Now for the bad news...

While the Ravens did manage to score 29 points, it took a five field-goal game by Billy Cundiff, effectively masking an otherwise pedestrian performance by the offense.  Cundiff has been exceptional since taking over for Matt Stover, but I honestly don’t want to see the man have to work so hard.

Over the last two games Flacco has combined for four turnovers and no touchdown passes. This is a trend that needs to be reversed; especially in the Red Zone.

In addition to the regular stats, this week BTN charted where the Ravens rank in the Red Zone among teams with a winning record. It isn’t pretty.

honestly - ravens have played 4 teams with good defenses so far: pittsburgh, tennessee, ny jets and even houston's defense is improved so far w/ wade phillips. i attribute red zone difficulties to facing good defenses which don't break in red zone. against the rams the ravens scored from midfield on those long pass plays so they weren't forced to play in the redzone much. the one thing on offense needing improvement is pass protection for flacco.
