Behind The Numbers: Comparing the Ravens offense to the AFC playoff teams
I’m back and I hope everyone had a happy and healthy holiday.  I’m still sifting through my gifts and have yet to find the new head coach I asked for…maybe next year. Are you listening Santa Bisciotti?

The numbers below compare the Ravens offense to those of the AFC playoffs teams between October 21st and December 9th. While the Ravens season was spiraling out of control, the other teams were finding their collective offensive strides.  I included Cleveland instead of Tennessee because the Ravens played them twice and during the time period of the research the Browns were closer to that final wildcard spot than the Titans.

When I did the initial research for the Ravens stats I knew they would not compare well against the other teams. But what surprised me is how close they were in several categories like Plays per Possession and Red Zone %.

What the numbers scream is that where the Ravens fail, they fail miserably; not just a little.

The astounding stat below is the TD-Punt ratio for the Patriots. They are the only team in the list that averaged more touchdowns than punts for the seven games charted.  And it wasn’t even close…they scored 32 TDs compared to only 19 punts.  Imagine a team that had just an even ratio in this category.  The Ravens numbers show a team that punts almost three times more than it scores a touchdown.

No team listed had more than 12 turnovers during the seven games except the Ravens who had 24. The Ravens were also the only team to average less than five yards per passing play.  By those numbers the Ravens have to pass three times to get a single first down. Dink and Dunk would be a bit of an understatement.

You watch football just like I do and know that good teams take care of the ball and get into the Red Zone.  If you ask me, only the Patriots and Colts have elite quarterbacks from the teams below.  Maybe there is hope for the Ravens next year if they get some decent QB play, a better offensive scheme and stop turning over the ball.

What was that I just heard…must have been Santa shaking his head and laughing…again?

FROM THE MEDIA WATCHDOG...

An early Christmas gift from ESPN radio: As I was wrapping gifts on Christmas Eve I tuned into ESPN radio to catch the Anita Marks show.  Miss Miami was on vacation and the guest host was Ken Weinman. I was not familiar with Mr. Weinman, but let me say it was a special holiday treat to hear him talk sports and take calls for four solid hours.  There were no tangents on non-sports related topics…no flubs on names, teams or stats. It was a Christmas miracle and the best local sports talk I had heard in a long time. Props to you Mr. Weinman and I hope 1300 AM radio does us all a favor and decides to feature you more in 2008.

I’ll be back next week with some thoughts about the BCS and how it really could be fan friendly with a few tweaks.
