Behind the Numbers - BEHIND THE NUMBERS: Can the passing game lift the Ravens past the Patriots?

BEHIND THE NUMBERS: Can the passing game lift the Ravens past the Patriots?

On paper these two teams are not vastly different except for a few key categories that should weigh heavily in the outcome on Sunday. Tom Brady has been sacked only 18 times this year compared to 36 times for Joe Flacco. The Patriots use a short passing game based on timing with their receivers between the numbers. Their RBs are not an integral part of the passing attack as Kevin Faulk is the leader with 37. Pressuring Brady and disrupting his timing will be critical for the Ravens defense.

The Ravens passing game looks to exploit match-ups outside the numbers and relies heavily on check downs to the RBs. Ray Rice has nearly as many receptions (78) as Randy Moss (83).

For the Ravens to be successful on offense they must limit penalties and get big plays from the running game as they did against the Raiders last week. Don’t fool yourself and think the Ravens can win if they fall behind and have to rely on Joe Flacco and the passing game.

NOTE: No penalty was called against Patriots' DT Mike Wright for a blow to the head during the play pictured above. This took place not long after Haloti Ngata was called for striking Tom Brady's head, much less forcefully I might add...just saying. ~ The Editor
